Context of Acts 19:21
19A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. 20In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.” 22He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia a little longer. 23About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21Paul purposed in the spirit, etc. - Previously to this he appears to have concerted a journey to Macedonia, and a visit to Corinth, the capital of Achaia, where he seems to have spent a considerable time, probably the whole winter of a.d. 58; see 1 Corinthians 16:5, 1 Corinthians 16:6; and afterwards to go to Jerusalem; but it is likely that he did not leave Ephesus till after pentecost, a.d. 59. ( 1 Corinthians 16:8;) And he resolved, if possible, to see…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21-22Paul resolved in the Spirit: He was probably troubled by what he heard about Corinth (see 1 Corinthians Book Introduction). Instead of going right away, he sent Timothy. Timothy carried a letter, 1 Corinthians, from Paul to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 4:17; 16:10–11). Paul later traveled to Macedonia and Achaia (Acts 20:1–3). “I must see Rome as well”: Paul, perhaps inspired by his successful strategy, wanted to share the gospel in the world's most…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 21-2221-22. After these things were ended--completed, implying something like a natural finish to his long period of labor at Ephesus. Paul purposed ... when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem ... After I have been there, I must also see Rome--Mark here the vastness of the apostle's missionary plans. They were all fulfilled, though he "saw Rome" only as a prisoner.Read the comment
