The Locusts, Fire, and Plumb Line
(Joel 2:1–11)
1This is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 showed meH7200H2009: He was preparingH3335 swarms of locustsH1462 just afterH310 the king’sH4428 harvestH1488, as the late spring cropH5927H3954 was coming upH8462.1 2AndH1961 whenH518 the locusts hadH3615 eatenH398 every green plantH6212 in the landH776, I saidH559, “LordH136 GODH3069, pleaseH4994 forgiveH5545! HowH4310 will JacobH3290 surviveH6965, sinceH3588 heH1931 is so smallH6996?”
3So the LORDH3068 relentedH5162 fromH5921 thisH2063 plan. “It will notH3808 happenH1961,” He saidH559.
4This is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 showed meH7200H2009: The LordH136 GODH3069 was callingH7121 for judgmentH7378 by fireH784. It consumedH398 the greatH7227 deepH8415 and devouredH398 the landH2506. 5Then I saidH559, “LordH136 GODH3069, pleaseH4994 stopH2308! HowH4310 will JacobH3290 surviveH6965, sinceH3588 heH1931 is so smallH6996?”
6So the LORDH3068 relentedH5162 fromH5921 thisH2063 plan. “ItH1931 will notH3808 happenH1961 eitherH1571,” saidH559 the LordH136 GODH3069.
7This is whatH3541 He showed meH7200: BeholdH2009, the LordH136 was standingH5324 byH5921 a wallH2346 true to plumbH594, with a plumb lineH594 in His handH3027. 8“AmosH5986, whatH4100 do youH859 seeH7200?” askedH559 the LORDH3068H413.
“A plumb lineH594,” I repliedH559.
“BeholdH2005,” saidH559 the LordH136, “I am settingH7760 a plumb lineH594 amongH7130 My peopleH5971 IsraelH3478; I will noH3808 longerH3254H5750 spareH5674 them:
Amaziah Accuses Amos
10Then AmaziahH558 the priestH3548 of BethelH1008 sentH7971 word toH413 JeroboamH3379 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559, “AmosH5986 has conspiredH7194 against youH5921 in the midstH7130 of the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478. The landH776 cannotH3808H3201 bearH3557 allH3605 his wordsH1697, 11forH3588 this is whatH3541 AmosH5986 has saidH559:
12And AmaziahH558 saidH559 toH413 AmosH5986, “Go awayH1980, you seerH2374! FleeH1272 toH413 the landH776 of JudahH3063; earn your breadH398H3899 thereH8033 and do your prophesyingH5012 thereH8033. 13But neverH3808 prophesyH5012 at BethelH1008 againH3254H5750, becauseH3588 itH1931 is the sanctuaryH4720 of the kingH4428 and the templeH1004 of the kingdomH4467.”
14“IH595H3808 was notH38082 a prophetH5030,” AmosH5986 repliedH6030, “nor was I the sonH11213 of a prophetH5030; ratherH3588, IH595 was a herdsmanH951 and a tenderH1103 of sycamore-fig treesH8256. 15But the LORDH3068 took meH3947 from followingH310 the flockH6629 and saidH559 to meH413H3068, ‘GoH1980, prophesyH5012 toH413 My peopleH5971 IsraelH3478.’
16Now, thereforeH6258, hearH8085 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068. YouH859 sayH559:
17ThereforeH3651 this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559:
