1 And Abraham אַבְרָהָם֙ 'av.ra.Ham H85 journeyed from thence toward the land אַ֣רְצָה 'Ar.tzah H776 of the South H5045 , and dwelt וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב vai.Ye.shev H3427 between Kadesh קָדֵ֖שׁ ka.Desh H6946 and Shur שׁ֑וּר Shur H7793 ; and he sojourned in Gerar בִּגְרָֽר׃ big.Rar H1642 . 2 And Abraham אַבְרָהָ֛ם 'av.ra.Ham H85 said H559 of Sarah שָׂרָ֥ה sa.Rah H8283 his wife אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ 'ish.To H802 , She is my sister אֲחֹ֣תִי 'a.Cho.ti H269 : and Abimelech אֲבִימֶ֙לֶךְ֙ 'a.vi.Me.lekh H40 king מֶ֣לֶךְ Me.lekh H4428 of Gerar גְּרָ֔ר ge.Rar H1642 sent H7971 , and took H3947 Sarah שָׂרָֽה׃ sa.Rah H8283 . 3 But God אֱלֹהִ֛ים 'E.lo.Him H430 came H935 to Abimelech אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ 'a.vi.Me.lekh H40 in a dream בַּחֲל֣וֹם ba.cha.Lom H2472 of the night הַלָּ֑יְלָה ha.La.ye.lah H3915 , and said H559 to him , Behold , thou art but a dead H4191 man , because of the woman הָאִשָּׁ֣ה ha.'i.Shah H802 whom thou hast taken H3947 ; for she is a man’s wife H802 . 4 Now Abimelech וַאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְ va.'a.vi.Me.lekh H40 had not come near her : and he said H559 , Lord אֲדֹנָ֕י 'a.do.Nai H136 , wilt thou slay H2026 even a righteous צַדִּ֖יק tza.Dik H6662 nation הֲג֥וֹי ha.Goy H1471 ? 5 Said H559 he not himself unto me , She is my sister אֲחֹ֣תִי 'a.Cho.ti H269 ? and she , even she herself said H559 , He is my brother אָחִ֣י 'a.Chi H251 : in the integrity בְּתָם־ be.tom- H8537 of my heart לְבָבִ֛י le.va.Vi H3824 and the innocency of my hands כַּפַּ֖י ka.Pai H3709 have I done this . 6 And God הָֽאֱלֹהִ֜ים ha.'E.lo.Him H430 said H559 unto him in the dream בַּחֲלֹ֗ם ba.cha.Lom H2472 , Yea , I know יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ ya.Da'.ti H3045 that in the integrity בְתָם־ ve.tom- H8537 of thy heart לְבָבְךָ֙ le.va.ve.Kha H3824 thou hast done this , and I also H1571 withheld thee from sinning מֵחֲטוֹ־ me.cha.tov- H2398 against me : therefore H3651 suffered I thee not to touch לִנְגֹּ֥עַ lin.Go.a' H5060 her . 7 Now H6258 therefore וְעַתָּ֗ה ve.'a.Tah H6258 restore H7725 the man’s הָאִישׁ֙ ha.'Ish H376 wife אֵֽשֶׁת־ 'e.shet- H802 ; for he is a prophet נָבִ֣יא na.Vi' H5030 , and he shall pray וְיִתְפַּלֵּ֥ל ve.yit.pa.Lel H6419 for thee, and thou shalt live וֶֽחְיֵ֑ה vech.Yeh H2421 : and if thou restore H7725 her not , know דַּ֚ע da' H3045 thou that thou shalt surely die H4191 , thou, and all that are thine. 8 And Abimelech אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ 'a.vi.Me.lekh H40 rose H7925 early וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם vai.yash.Kem H7925 in the morning בַּבֹּ֗קֶר ba.Bo.ker H1242 , and called H7121 all his servants עֲבָדָ֔יו 'a.va.Dav H5650 , and told all these things H1697 in their ears בְּאָזְנֵיהֶ֑ם be.'a.ze.nei.Hem H241 : and the men H376 were sore afraid וַיִּֽירְא֥וּ vai.yi.re.'U H3372 . 9 Then Abimelech אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ 'a.vi.Me.lekh H40 called H7121 Abraham לְאַבְרָהָ֗ם le.'av.ra.Ham H85 , and said H559 unto him , What hast thou done unto us ? and wherein have I sinned H2398 against thee, that thou hast brought H935 on me and on my kingdom מַמְלַכְתִּ֖י mam.lakh.Ti H4467 a great גְדֹלָ֑ה ge.do.Lah H1419 sin H2398 ? thou hast done deeds מַעֲשִׂים֙ ma.'a.Sim H4639 unto me that ought not to be done . 10 And Abimelech אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ 'a.vi.Me.lekh H40 said H559 unto Abraham אַבְרָהָ֑ם 'av.ra.Ham H85 , What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing הַדָּבָ֥ר ha.da.Var H1697 ? 11 And Abraham אַבְרָהָ֔ם 'av.ra.Ham H85 said H559 , Because I thought , Surely the fear יִרְאַ֣ת yir.'At H3374 of God אֱלֹהִ֔ים 'E.lo.Him H430 is not in this place בַּמָּק֖וֹם ba.ma.Kom H4725 ; and they will slay H2026 me for my wife’s אִשְׁתִּֽי׃ 'ish.Ti H802 sake . 12 And moreover she is indeed my sister אֲחֹתִ֤י 'a.cho.Ti H269 , the daughter בַת־ vat- H1323 of my father אָבִי֙ 'a.Vi H1 , but not the daughter בַת־ vat- H1323 of my mother אִמִּ֑י 'i.Mi H517 ; and she became H1961 my wife לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ le.'i.Shah H802 : 13 and it came H935 to pass , when God אֱלֹהִים֮ 'E.lo.Him H430 caused me to wander הִתְע֣וּ hit.'U H8582 from my father’s אָבִי֒ 'a.Vi H1 house H1004 , that I said H559 unto her , This is thy kindness which thou shalt show unto me : at every place הַמָּקוֹם֙ ha.ma.kOm H4725 whither we shall come H935 , say H559 of me , He is my brother אָחִ֥י 'a.Chi H251 . 14 And Abimelech אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ 'a.vi.Me.lekh H40 took H3947 sheep צֹ֣אן tzon H6629 and oxen H1241 , and men-servants and women-servants, and gave H5414 them unto Abraham לְאַבְרָהָ֑ם le.'av.ra.Ham H85 , and restored H7725 him Sarah שָׂרָ֥ה sa.Rah H8283 his wife אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ 'ish.To H802 . 15 And Abimelech אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ 'a.vi.Me.lekh H40 said H559 , Behold , my land אַרְצִ֖י 'ar.Tzi H776 is before thee: dwell שֵֽׁב׃ Shev H3427 where it pleaseth thee. 16 And unto Sarah וּלְשָׂרָ֣ה u.le.sa.Rah H8283 he said H559 , Behold , I have given נָתַ֜תִּי na.Ta.ti H5414 thy brother לְאָחִ֔יךְ le.'a.Chikh H251 a thousand אֶ֤לֶף 'E.lef H505 pieces of silver כֶּ֙סֶף֙ ke.sef H3701 : behold , it is for thee a covering כְּס֣וּת ke.Sut H3682 of the eyes עֵינַ֔יִם 'ei.Na.yim H5869 to all that are with thee; and in respect of all thou art righted. 17 And Abraham אַבְרָהָ֖ם 'av.ra.Ham H85 prayed וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל vai.yit.pa.Lel H6419 unto God הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים ha.'E.lo.Him H430 : and God אֱלֹהִ֜ים 'E.lo.Him H430 healed וַיִּרְפָּ֨א vai.yir.Pa' H7495 Abimelech אֲבִימֶ֧לֶךְ 'a.vi.Me.lekh H40 , and his wife אִשְׁתּ֛וֹ 'ish.To H802 , and his maid-servants; and they bare children H3205 . 18 For Jehovah had fast closed up all the wombs רֶ֖חֶם Re.chem H7358 of the house H1004 of Abimelech אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ 'a.vi.Me.lekh H40 , because of Sarah שָׂרָ֖ה sa.Rah H8283 , Abraham’s wife אֵ֥שֶׁת 'E.shet H802 . ← Genesis 19 Genesis 21 → Commentaries on Genesis 20 American Standard Version — 1901 — Public Domain
