Context of Romans 8:9
7For the mindset of the flesh is hostile toward God, for it does not submit itself to the law of God—for it cannot. 8So those who are in the flesh cannot please God. However, you are not in the flesh but in the Ruach—if indeed the Ruach Elohim dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Ruach of Messiah, he does not belong to Him. 10But if Messiah is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the Spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11And if the Ruach of the One who raised Yeshua from the dead dwells in you, the One who raised Messiah Yeshua from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Ruach who dwells in you.

Commentaries on Romans 8:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9But ye are not in the flesh - Ye Christians, who have believed in Christ Jesus as the sin offering which has condemned sin in the flesh; and, having been justified by faith and made partakers of the Holy Spirit, are enabled to walk in newness of life. If so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you - Or seeing that, , the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. The flesh, the sinful principle, dwelt in them before; and its motions were the proofs of its indwelling…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9But ye - You who are Christians. This is the opposite character to what he had been describing, and shows the power of the gospel. Not in the flesh - Not under the full influence of corrupt desires and passions. But in the Spirit - That is, you are spiritually minded; you are under the direction and influence of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God - The Holy Spirit. Dwell in you - The Holy Spirit is often represented as dwelling in the hearts of Christians…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9You … are controlled … by the Spirit: In contrast to unbelievers, who still live under the rule of Adam’s sinful nature, Christians are guided in their lives by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not remove human choice or make Christians unable to sin. However, as the strongest influence in the lives of Christians, the Spirit makes it possible for them to resist the ongoing power of sin.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you--This does not mean, "if the disposition or mind of God dwell in you"; but "if the Holy Ghost dwell in you" (see 1Co 6:11, 19; 3:16, &c.). (It thus appears that to be "in the spirit" means here to be under the dominion of our own renewed mind; because the indwelling of God's Spirit is given as the evidence that we are "in the spirit"). Now--"But." if any man…Read the comment
