Context of Romans 8:9
7the mind of the flesh [with its sinful pursuits] is actively hostile to God. It does not submit itself to God’s law, since it cannot, 8and those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God. However, you are not [living] in the flesh [controlled by the sinful nature] but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God lives in you [directing and guiding you]. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him [and is not a child of God]. 10If Christ lives in you, though your [natural] body is dead because of sin, your spirit is alive because of righteousness [which He provides]. 11And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.

Commentaries on Romans 8:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9But ye are not in the flesh - Ye Christians, who have believed in Christ Jesus as the sin offering which has condemned sin in the flesh; and, having been justified by faith and made partakers of the Holy Spirit, are enabled to walk in newness of life. If so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you - Or seeing that, , the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. The flesh, the sinful principle, dwelt in them before; and its motions were the proofs of its indwelling…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9But ye - You who are Christians. This is the opposite character to what he had been describing, and shows the power of the gospel. Not in the flesh - Not under the full influence of corrupt desires and passions. But in the Spirit - That is, you are spiritually minded; you are under the direction and influence of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God - The Holy Spirit. Dwell in you - The Holy Spirit is often represented as dwelling in the hearts of Christians…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9You … are controlled … by the Spirit: In contrast to unbelievers, who still live under the rule of Adam’s sinful nature, Christians are guided in their lives by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not remove human choice or make Christians unable to sin. However, as the strongest influence in the lives of Christians, the Spirit makes it possible for them to resist the ongoing power of sin.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you--This does not mean, "if the disposition or mind of God dwell in you"; but "if the Holy Ghost dwell in you" (see 1Co 6:11, 19; 3:16, &c.). (It thus appears that to be "in the spirit" means here to be under the dominion of our own renewed mind; because the indwelling of God's Spirit is given as the evidence that we are "in the spirit"). Now--"But." if any man…Read the comment
