1 Kings 8
Revised Version 1895
1Then SolomonH8010 assembledH6950 the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478, and allH3605 the headsH7218 of the tribesH4294, the princesH5387 of the fathers’H1 houses of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, unto kingH4428 SolomonH8010 in JerusalemH3389, to bringH5927 upH5927 the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068 outH413 of the cityH5892 of DavidH1732, whichH1931 is ZionH6726. 2And allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 assembledH6950 themselvesH6950 unto kingH4428 SolomonH8010 at the feastH2282, in the monthH2320 EthanimH388, whichH1931 is the seventhH7637 monthH2320. 3And allH3605 the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478 cameH935, and the priestsH3548 tookH5375 upH5375 the arkH727. 4And they broughtH5927 upH5927 the arkH727 of the LORDH3068, and the tentH168 of meetingH4150, and allH3605 the holyH6944 vesselsH3627 that were in the TentH168; evenH853 theseH3605 didH834 the priestsH3548 and the LevitesH3881 bringH5927 upH5927. 5And kingH4428 SolomonH8010 and allH3605 the congregationH5712 of IsraelH3478, that were assembledH3259 unto him, were with him beforeH6440 the arkH727, sacrificingH2076 sheepH6629 and oxenH1241, that could notH3808 be toldH5608 norH3808 numberedH5608 for multitudeH7230. 6And the priestsH3548 broughtH935 in the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068 unto itsH853 placeH4725, intoH413 the oracle of the houseH1004, to the mostH6944 holyH6944 placeH4725, evenH853 underH8478 the wingsH3671 of the cherubimH3742. 7For the cherubimH3742 spreadH6566 forth their wingsH3671 over the placeH4725 of the arkH727, and the cherubimH3742 covered the arkH727 and the staves thereof aboveH5921. 8And the staves were soH4480 longH5704 that the endsH7218 of the staves were seenH7200 from the holyH6944 placeH6944 beforeH6440 the oracle; but they were notH3808 seenH7200 withoutH3808: and there they are, unto this dayH3117. 9There was nothingH369 in the arkH727 save the twoH8147 tables of stoneH68 whichH834 MosesH4872 putH3318 there at HorebH2722, when the LORDH3068 madeH3772 a covenant with the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, when they cameH3318 outH3318 of the landH776 of EgyptH4714. 10And it cameH1961 to passH1961, when the priestsH3548 were comeH1961 outH3318 of the holyH6944 placeH6944, that the cloudH6051 filledH4390 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, 11soH3808 that the priestsH3548 couldH3201 notH3808 standH5975 to ministerH8334 by reason of the cloudH6051: for the gloryH3519 of the LORDH3068 filledH4390 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 12Then spake SolomonH8010, The LORDH3068 hath saidH559 that he would dwellH7931 in the thickH6205 darknessH6205. 13I have surelyH1129 builtH1129 thee an houseH1004 of habitationH2073, a placeH4349 for thee to dwellH3427 in for everH5769. 14And the kingH4428 turnedH5437 his faceH6440 aboutH5437, and blessedH1288 allH3605 the congregationH6951 of IsraelH3478: and allH3605 the congregationH6951 of IsraelH3478 stoodH5975. 15And he saidH559, BlessedH1288 be the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, whichH834 spake with his mouthH6310 unto DavidH1732 my fatherH1, and hath with his handH3027 fulfilledH4390 it, sayingH559, 16SinceH4480 the dayH3117 that I broughtH3318 forthH3318 my peopleH5971 IsraelH3478 outH3318 of EgyptH4714, I choseH977 noH3808 cityH5892 outH3318 of allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 to buildH1129 an houseH1004, that my nameH8034 might be there; but I choseH977 DavidH1732 to be over my peopleH5971 IsraelH3478. 17NowH1961 it was in the heartH3824 of DavidH1732 my fatherH1 to buildH1129 an houseH1004 for the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478. 18But the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto DavidH1732 my fatherH1, Whereas it was in thine heartH3824 to buildH1129 an houseH1004 for my nameH8034, thou didst wellH2895 that it was in thine heartH3824: 19neverthelessH3588 thou shalt notH3808 buildH1129 the houseH1004; but thy sonH1121 that shall comeH3318 forthH3318 outH3318 of thy loinsH2504, he shall buildH1129 the houseH1004 for my nameH8034. 20And the LORDH3068 hath establishedH6965 his wordH1697 that he spake; for I am risenH6965 upH6965 in the roomH1004 of DavidH1732 my fatherH1, and sitH3427 on the throneH3678 of IsraelH3478, as the LORDH3068 promisedH1696, and have builtH1129 the houseH1004 for the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478. 21And there have I setH7760 a placeH4725 for the arkH727, whereinH834 is the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068, whichH834 he madeH3772 with our fathersH1, when he broughtH3318 them outH3318 of the landH776 of EgyptH4714. 22And SolomonH8010 stoodH5975 beforeH6440 the altarH4196 of the LORDH3068 in the presenceH6440 of allH3605 the congregationH6951 of IsraelH3478, and spreadH6566 forth his handsH3709 towardH6440 heavenH8064: 23and he saidH559, O LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, there is noH369 GodH430 like thee, in heavenH8064 aboveH5921, or on earthH776 beneathH8478; who keepest covenantH1285 and mercyH3068 with thy servantsH5650, that walkH1980 beforeH6440 thee with allH3605 their heartH3820: 24who hast keptH8104 with thy servantH5650 DavidH1732 my fatherH1 that whichH834 thou didst promiseH1696 him: yea, thou spakest with thy mouthH6310, and hast fulfilledH4390 it with thine handH3027, as it is this dayH3117. 25NowH6258 therefore, O LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, keepH8104 with thy servantH5650 DavidH1732 my fatherH1 that whichH834 thou hast promisedH1696 him, sayingH559, There shall notH3808 failH3772 thee a manH376 in my sightH6440 to sitH3427 on the throneH3678 of IsraelH3478; ifH518 onlyH7535 thy childrenH1121 takeH8104 heedH8104 to their wayH1870 to walkH1980 beforeH6440 meH6440 as thou hast walkedH1980 beforeH6440 meH6440. 26NowH6258 therefore, O GodH430 of IsraelH3478, letH4994 thy wordH1697, I prayH4994 thee, be verifiedH539, whichH834 thou spakest unto thy servantH5650 DavidH1732 my fatherH1. 27But will GodH430 in veryH2088 deed dwellH3427 on the earthH776? beholdH2009, heavenH8064 and the heavenH8064 of heavensH8064 cannotH3808 containH3557 thee; howH834 muchH637 lessH637 this houseH1004 that I have builded! 28Yet have thou respectH6437 unto the prayerH8605 of thy servantH5650, and to his supplicationH8467, O LORDH3068 my GodH430, to hearken unto the cryH7440 and to the prayerH8605 whichH834 thy servantH5650 prayeth beforeH6440 thee this dayH3117: 29that thine eyesH5869 may be openH6605 towardH413 this houseH1004 nightH3915 and dayH3117, even towardH413 the placeH4725 whereof thou hast saidH559, My nameH8034 shall be there: to hearken unto the prayerH8605 whichH834 thy servantH5650 shall prayH6419 towardH413 this placeH4725. 30And hearken thou to the supplicationH8467 of thy servantH5650, and of thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, when they shall prayH6419 towardH413 this placeH4725: yea, hearH8085 thou in heavenH8064 thy dwellingH3427 placeH4725; and when thou hearest, forgiveH5545. 31IfH834 a manH376 sinH2398 againstH6440 his neighbour, and an oathH423 be laidH6440 uponH935 him to cause him to swear, and he comeH935 and swear beforeH6440 thine altarH4196 in this houseH1004: 32then hearH8085 thou in heavenH8064, and doH6213, and judgeH8199 thy servantsH5650, condemningH7561 the wickedH7563, to bringH5414 his wayH1870 upon his own headH7218; and justifyingH6663 the righteousH6662, to giveH5414 him according to his righteousnessH6666. 33When thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478 be smitten downH5062 beforeH6440 the enemyH341, becauseH834 they have sinnedH2398 againstH413 thee; ifH834 they turnH7725 againH7725 to thee, and confessH3034 thy nameH8034, and prayH6419 and makeH7725 supplicationH6419 unto thee in this houseH1004: 34then hearH8085 thou in heavenH8064, and forgiveH5545 the sinH2403 of thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, and bringH7725 them againH7725 unto the landH127 whichH834 thou gavest unto their fathersH1; 35When heavenH8064 is shutH6113 upH853, and there is noH3808 rainH4306, becauseH3588 they have sinnedH2398 againstH413 thee; ifH3588 they prayH6419 towardH413 this placeH4725, and confessH3034 thy nameH8034, and turnH7725 from their sinH2398, when thou dost afflictH6031 them: 36then hearH8085 thou in heavenH8064, and forgiveH5545 the sinH2403 of thy servantsH5650, and of thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, when thou teachest them the goodH2896 wayH1870 whereinH834 they should walkH1870; and sendH5414 rainH4306 uponH5921 thy landH776, whichH834 thou hast givenH5414 to thy peopleH5971 for an inheritanceH5159. 37IfH3588 there be in the landH776 famineH7458, ifH3588 there be pestilenceH1698, ifH3588 there be blasting or mildewH3420, locustH697 or caterpiller; ifH3588 their enemyH341 besiege them in the landH776 of their citiesH8179; whatsoeverH3605 plagueH1698, whatsoeverH3605 sicknessH4245 there be; 38whatH834 prayerH8605 and supplicationH8467 soever be madeH3045 by anyH3605 manH376, or by allH3605 thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, whichH834 shall knowH3045 everyH3605 manH376 the plagueH5061 of his ownH1961 heartH3824, and spreadH6566 forthH3045 his handsH3709 towardH413 this houseH1004: 39then hearH8085 thou in heavenH8064 thy dwellingH3427 placeH4349, and forgiveH5545, and doH6213, and renderH5414 unto everyH3605 manH376 accordingH376 to allH3605 his waysH1870, whoseH834 heartH3824 thou knowest; (for thou, evenH3588 thou onlyH905, knowest the heartsH3824 of allH3605 the childrenH1121 of menH376;) 40that they may fearH3372 thee allH3605 the daysH3117 that they liveH2416 in the landH127 whichH834 thou gavest unto our fathersH1. 41MoreoverH1571 concerning the strangerH5237, that is notH3808 of thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, when he shall comeH935 outH413 of a farH7350 countryH776 for thy name’sH8034 sakeH4616; 42(for they shall hearH8085 of thy greatH1419 nameH8034, and of thy mightyH2389 handH3027, and of thy stretchedH5186 outH5186 armH2220;) when he shall comeH935 and prayH6419 towardH413 this houseH1004; 43hearH8085 thou in heavenH8064 thy dwellingH3427 placeH4349, and doH6213 accordingH5921 to allH3605 that the strangerH5237 calleth to thee for; that allH3605 the peoplesH5971 of the earthH776 may knowH3045 thy nameH8034, to fearH3372 thee, as doth thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, and that they may knowH3045 that this houseH1004 whichH834 I have builtH1129 is calledH7121 by thy nameH8034. 44IfH3588 thy peopleH5971 goH3318 outH3318 to battleH4421 againstH5921 their enemyH341, by whatsoever wayH1870 thou shalt sendH7971 them, and they prayH6419 unto the LORDH3068 towardH413 the cityH5892 whichH834 thou hast chosenH977, and towardH413 the houseH1004 whichH834 I have builtH1129 for thy nameH8034: 45then hearH8085 thou in heavenH8064 their prayerH8605 and their supplicationH8467, and maintain their causeH4941. 46IfH3588 they sinH2398 againstH413 thee, (for there is noH3808 manH120 that sinneth notH3808,) and thou be angryH599 with them, and deliverH5414 them to the enemyH341, soH5414 that they carry them awayH7617 captiveH7617 unto the landH776 of the enemyH341, farH7350 offH7350 or nearH7138; 47yet ifH834 they shall bethink themselves in the landH776 whither they are carriedH7617 captiveH7617, and turnH7725 againH7725, and makeH7725 supplication unto thee in the landH776 of them that carriedH7617 them captiveH7617, sayingH559, WeH834 have sinnedH2398, and have doneH2398 perversely, weH834 have dealt wickedlyH7561; 48ifH834 they returnH7725 unto thee with allH3605 their heartH3824 and with allH3605 their soulH5315 in the landH776 of their enemiesH341, whichH834 carriedH7617 them captiveH7617, and prayH6419 unto thee towardH413 their landH776, whichH834 thou gavest unto their fathersH1, the cityH5892 whichH834 thou hast chosenH977, and the houseH1004 whichH834 I have builtH1129 for thy nameH8034: 49then hearH8085 thou their prayerH8605 and their supplicationH8467 in heavenH8064 thy dwellingH3427 placeH4349, and maintain their causeH4941; 50and forgiveH5545 thy peopleH5971 whichH834 have sinnedH2398 againstH6440 thee, and allH3605 their transgressionsH6588 whereinH834 they have transgressedH6586 againstH6440 thee; and giveH5414 them compassionH7355 beforeH6440 thoseH3605 who carriedH7617 them captiveH7617, that they may have compassionH7355 on them: 51For they be thy peopleH5971, and thine inheritanceH5159 whichH834 thou broughtest forthH3318 outH3318 of EgyptH4714, from the midstH8432 of the furnaceH3564 of ironH1270: 52that thine eyesH5869 may be openH6605 unto the supplicationH8467 of thy servantH5650, and unto the supplicationH8467 of thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, to hearken unto them whensoever they cryH7121 unto thee. 53For thou didst separateH914 them from among allH3605 the peoplesH5971 of the earthH776, to be thine inheritanceH5159, as thou spakest by the handH3027 of MosesH4872 thy servantH5650, when thou broughtest our fathersH1 outH3318 of EgyptH4714, O LordH136 GODH136. 54And it was soH1961, that when SolomonH8010 had madeH1961 an endH3615 of prayingH6419 allH3605 this prayerH8605 and supplicationH8467 unto the LORDH3068, he aroseH6965 from beforeH6440 the altarH4196 of the LORDH3068, from kneelingH3766 on his kneesH1290 with his handsH3709 spreadH6566 forth towardH413 heavenH8064. 55And he stoodH5975, and blessedH1288 allH3605 the congregationH6951 of IsraelH3478 with a loudH1419 voiceH6963, sayingH559, 56BlessedH1288 be the LORDH3068, that hath givenH5414 restH4496 unto his peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, accordingH3027 to allH3605 that he promisedH1696: there hath notH3808 failedH5307 one wordH1697 of allH3605 his goodH2896 promiseH1697, whichH834 he promisedH1696 by the handH3027 of MosesH4872 his servantH5650. 57The LORDH3068 our GodH430 be with usH834, as he was with our fathersH1: letH408 him notH408 leaveH5800 usH834, norH408 forsakeH5203 usH834: 58that he may inclineH5186 our heartsH3824 unto him, to walkH1870 in allH3605 his waysH1870, and to keepH8104 his commandmentsH4687, and his statutesH2706, and his judgmentsH4941, whichH834 he commandedH6680 our fathersH1. 59And letH1961 theseH428 my wordsH1697, wherewith I have madeH6213 supplication beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, be nigh unto the LORDH3068 our GodH430 dayH3117 and nightH3915, that he maintain the causeH4941 of his servantH5650, and the causeH4941 of his peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, as everyH3117 dayH3117 shall require: 60that allH3605 the peoplesH5971 of the earthH776 may knowH3045 that the LORDH3068, he is GodH430; there is noneH369 elseH5750. 61LetH1961 your heartH3824 therefore be perfectH8003 with the LORDH3068 our GodH430, to walk in his statutesH2706, and to keepH8104 his commandmentsH4687, as at this dayH3117. 62And the kingH4428, and allH3605 IsraelH3478 with him, offeredH2076 sacrificeH2077 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 63And SolomonH8010 offeredH2076 for the sacrificeH2077 of peaceH8002 offeringsH8002, whichH834 he offeredH2076 unto the LORDH3068, twoH8147 and twentyH6242 thousandH505 oxenH1241, and an hundredH3967 and twentyH6242 thousandH505 sheepH6629. SoH834 the kingH4428 and allH3605 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 dedicatedH2596 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 64The sameH1931 dayH3117 didH6213 the kingH4428 hallow the middleH8432 of the courtH2691 that was beforeH6440 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068: for there he offered the burntH5930 offering, and the mealH4503 offering, and the fatH2459 of the peaceH8002 offeringsH8002: becauseH3588 the brasen altarH4196 that was beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 was too littleH6996 to receive the burntH5930 offering, and the mealH4503 offering, and the fatH2459 of the peaceH8002 offeringsH8002. 65SoH6213 SolomonH8010 heldH6213 the feastH2282 at that time, and allH3605 IsraelH3478 with him, a greatH1419 congregationH6951, from the enteringH935 in of HamathH2574 unto the brookH5158 of EgyptH4714, beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 our GodH430, sevenH7651 daysH3117 and sevenH7651 daysH3117, evenH5704 fourteenH6240 daysH3117. 66On the eighthH8066 dayH3117 he sentH7971 the peopleH5971 awayH7971, and they blessedH1288 the kingH4428, and went unto their tentsH168 joyfulH8056 and gladH8056 of heartH3820 for allH3605 the goodness that the LORDH3068 had shewed unto DavidH1732 his servantH5650, and to IsraelH3478 his peopleH5971.
