And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.” 5And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; 6for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;

Commentaries on Luke 11:4

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4Lead us not into temptation, etc. - Dr. Lightfoot believes that this petition is intended against the visible apparitions of the devil, and his actual obsessions; he thinks that the meaning is too much softened by our translation. Deliver us from evil, is certainly a very inadequate rendering of ̔ ̔ ; literally, Deliver us from the wicked one.Read the comment

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4And lead us not into temptation: This phrase is difficult in Greek. God does not tempt his people (James 1:13). But testing is part of Christian growth (James 1:2–4), so this raises a question: Should believers pray to avoid testing? The phrase probably means “protect us when we face temptation.”Read the comment
