Context of Luke 11:4
2Jesus replied, ‘When you pray, you should say this: “God, our Father, we want people to give honour to you. We want the day when you rule everyone to come soon. 3Please give to us the food that we need each day. Forgive us for our sins, because we also forgive everyone who has done wrong things against us. And do not let us agree to do wrong things.” ’ 5Jesus then told a story to teach them how to pray. He said, ‘Let me tell you about someone who goes to a friend's home at midnight. “My friend,” he says, “please give me three loaves of bread. 6A friend of mine is on a journey and he has arrived at my house. But I have no food to give him.”

Commentaries on Luke 11:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4Lead us not into temptation, etc. - Dr. Lightfoot believes that this petition is intended against the visible apparitions of the devil, and his actual obsessions; he thinks that the meaning is too much softened by our translation. Deliver us from evil, is certainly a very inadequate rendering of ̔ ̔ ; literally, Deliver us from the wicked one.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2-4Verses 2-4 See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 6:9-13. Luke 11:4 For we also forgive - This is somewhat different from the expression in Matthew, though the sense is the same. The idea is, that unless we forgive others, God will not forgive us; and unless we come to him “really” forgiving all others, we cannot expect pardon. It does not mean that by forgiving others we “deserve” forgiveness ourselves, or “merit it,” but that this is a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4And lead us not into temptation: This phrase is difficult in Greek. God does not tempt his people (James 1:13). But testing is part of Christian growth (James 1:2–4), so this raises a question: Should believers pray to avoid testing? The phrase probably means “protect us when we face temptation.”Read the comment
