Context of Romans 8:1

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh,

Commentaries on Romans 8:1

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1There is, therefore, now no condemnation - To do justice to St. Paul's reasoning, this chapter must be read in the closest connection with the preceding. There we have seen the unavailing struggles of an awakened Jew, who sought pardon and holiness from that law which he was conscious he had broken; and in which he could find no provision for pardon, and no power to sanctify. This conviction having brought him to the very brink of despair, and, being on…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1There is, therefore, now - This is connected with the closing verses of Romans 7:23-25. It is implied here that there was condemnation under the Law, and would be still, but for the intervention of the gospel. No condemnation - This does not mean that sin in believers is not to be condemned as much as any where, for the contrary is everywhere taught in the Scriptures; but it means, (1) That the gospel does not pronounce condemnation like the Law. Its…Read the comment

(32-39) Verses 1-9 Believers may be chastened of the Lord, but will not be condemned with the world. By their union with Christ through faith, they are thus secured. What…Read the comment

Paul confidently declares that people who belong to Christ Jesus do not need to fear condemnation for their sins.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-39In this surpassing chapter the several streams of the preceding argument meet and flow in one "river of the water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb," until it seems to lose itself in the ocean of a blissful eternity. First: The Sanctification of Believers (Ro 8:1-13). 1. There is therefore now, &c.--referring to the immediately preceding context [Olshausen, Philippi, Meyer, Alford, &c.].
