Titus 1:4-16
4To 1Titus, 2my true child 3in a 4common faith: 5Grace and peace from God the Father and 6Christ Jesus our Savior.
5For this reason I left you in 7Crete, that you would set in order what remains and 8appoint 9elders in every city as I directed you, 6namely, 10if any man is above reproach, the 11husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of 12dissipation or 13rebellion. 7For the 1415overseer must be above reproach as 16God’s steward, not 17self-willed, not quick-tempered, not 18addicted to wine, not pugnacious, 19not fond of sordid gain, 8but 20hospitable, 21loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 922holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in 23sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
1024For there are many 25rebellious men, 26empty talkers and deceivers, especially 27those of the circumcision, 11who must be silenced because they are upsetting 28whole families, teaching 29things they should not teach 30for the sake of sordid gain. 12One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “31Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13This testimony is true. For this reason 32reprove them 33severely so that they may be 34sound in the faith, 14not paying attention to Jewish 35myths and 36commandments of men who 37turn away from the truth. 1538To the pure, all things are pure; but 39to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their 40mind and their conscience are defiled. 1641They profess to know God, but by their deeds they 42deny Him, being 43detestable and 44disobedient and 45worthless 46for any good deed.
