1 Timothy 3

Overseers and Deacons

11It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the 2office of 3overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. 245An overseer, then, must be above reproach, 6the husband of one wife, 7temperate, prudent, respectable, 8hospitable, 9able to teach, 310not addicted to wine 11or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, 12free from the love of money. 4He must be one who 13manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of 14the church of God?), 6and not a new convert, so that he will not become 15conceited and fall into the 16condemnation 17incurred by the devil. 7And he must 18have a good reputation with 19those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and 20the snare of the devil.

821Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not 22double-tongued, 2324or addicted to much wine 2526or fond of sordid gain, 927but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 1028These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. 1129Women must likewise be dignified, 30not malicious gossips, but 31temperate, faithful in all things. 1232Deacons must be 33husbands of only one wife, and 3435good managers of their children and their own households. 13For those who have served well as deacons 36obtain for themselves a 37high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

14I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long; 15but 38in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how 39one ought to conduct himself in 40the household of God, which is the 41church of 42the living God, the 43pillar and support of the truth. 16By common confession, great is 44the mystery of godliness: He who was 45revealed in the flesh, Was 4647vindicated 48in the Spirit, 49Seen by angels, 50Proclaimed among the nations, 51Believed on in the world, 52Taken up in glory.
