1Now thereH8033was a certainאֶחָ֜ד'e.ChadH259manאִ֨ישׁ'ishH376fromRamathaim-zophimH7436from thehillמֵהַ֣רme.HarH2022countryH2022of Ephraimאֶפְרָ֑יִם'ef.Ra.yimH669,and his nameוּשְׁמ֡וֹu.she.MoH8034wasElkanahאֶ֠לְקָנָה'El.ka.nahH511the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Jerohamיְרֹחָ֧םye.ro.ChamH3395,the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Elihuאֱלִיה֛וּא'e.li.Hu'H453,the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Tohuתֹּ֥חוּTo.chuH8459,the sonבֶן־ven-H1121of Zuphצ֖וּףtzufH6689,an Ephraimiteאֶפְרָתִֽי׃'ef.ra.TiH673.

2He hadtwoשְׁתֵּ֣יshe.TeiH8147wivesנָשִׁ֔יםna.ShimH802:the nameשֵׁ֤םshemH8034of oneאַחַת֙'a.ChatH259wasHannahחַנָּ֔הcha.NahH2584and the nameוְשֵׁ֥םve.ShemH8034of the otherהַשֵּׁנִ֖יתha.she.NitH8145Peninnahפְּנִנָּ֑הpe.ni.NahH6444;and Peninnahלִפְנִנָּה֙lif.ni.NahH6444hadוַיְהִ֤יvay.HiH1961childrenיְלָדִ֔יםye.la.DimH3206,but Hannahוּלְחַנָּ֖הu.le.cha.NahH2584hadH369noH369childrenיְלָדִֽים׃ye.la.DimH3206.

3Now thisהַה֤וּאha.Hu'H1931manהָאִ֨ישׁha.'IshH376would goוְעָלָה֩ve.'a.LahH5927up from his cityמֵֽעִירוֹ֙me.'i.RoH5892yearlyH3117to worshipלְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֹ֧תle.hish.ta.cha.VotH7812and to sacrificeוְלִזְבֹּ֛חַve.liz.Bo.achH2076to the Lordלַיהוָ֥הla.Yah.wehH3068of hostsצְבָא֖וֹתtze.va.'otH6635inShilohבְּשִׁלֹ֑הbe.shi.LohH7887.And the twoשְׁנֵ֣יshe.NeiH8147sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Eliעֵלִ֗י'e.LiH5941,Hophniחָפְנִי֙cha.fe.NiH2652and Phinehasוּפִ֣נְחָ֔סu.Fin.ChasH6372,were priestsכֹּהֲנִ֖יםko.ha.NimH3548to the Lordלַיהוָֽה׃la.Yah.wehH3068thereוְשָׁ֞םve.ShamH8033.

4When the dayהַיּ֔וֹםhai.YomH3117cameוַיְהִ֣יvay.HiH1961that Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֑ה'el.ka.NahH511sacrificedוַיִּזְבַּ֖חvai.yiz.BachH2076, hewould giveוְנָתַ֞ןve.na.TanH5414portionsמָנֽוֹת׃ma.NotH4490to Peninnahלִפְנִנָּ֣הlif.ni.NahH6444his wifeאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ'ish.ToH802and to allוּֽלְכָל־u.le.khol-H3605her sonsבָּנֶ֛יהָba.Nei.haH1121and her daughtersוּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָu.ve.no.Tei.haH1323;

5but to Hannahוּלְחַנָּ֕הu.le.cha.NahH2584he would giveיִתֵּ֛ןyi.TenH5414a doubleאַפָּ֑יִם'a.Pa.yimH639portionמָנָ֥הma.NahH4490,for he lovedאָהֵ֔ב'a.HevH157Hannahחַנָּה֙cha.NahH2584,but the Lordוַֽיהוָ֖הva.Yah.wehH3068had closedסָגַ֥רsa.GarH5462her wombרַחְמָֽהּ׃rach.MahH7358.

6Her rivalצָֽרָתָהּ֙tza.ra.TahH6869, however,would provokeוְכִֽעֲסַ֤תָּהve.khi.'a.Sa.tahH3707her bitterlyגַּם־ כַּ֔עַסgam- Ka.'asH1571 H3708to irritateהַרְּעִמָ֑הּha.re.'i.MahH7481her, becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068had closedסָגַ֥רsa.GarH5462her wombרַחְמָֽהּ׃rach.MahH7358.

7It happenedיַעֲשֶׂ֜הya.'a.SehH6213yearשָׁנָ֣הsha.NahH8141after yearבְשָׁנָ֗הve.sha.NahH8141,as oftenמִדֵּ֤יmi.DeiH1767as she wentעֲלֹתָהּ֙'a.lo.TahH5927up to the houseבְּבֵ֣יתbe.VeitH1004of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,she would provokeתַּכְעִסֶ֑נָּהtakh.'i.Se.nahH3707her; so she weptוַתִּבְכֶּ֖הva.tiv.KehH1058and would not eatתֹאכַֽל׃to.KhalH398.

8Then Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֣ה'el.ka.NahH511her husbandאִישָׁ֗הּ'i.ShahH376saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to her, “Hannahחַנָּה֙cha.NahH2584,whyלָ֣מֶהLa.mehH4100do you weepתִבְכִּ֗יtiv.KiH1058and whyוְלָ֙מֶה֙ve.La.mehH4100do you not eatתֹֽאכְלִ֔יtokh.LiH398and whyוְלָ֖מֶהve.La.mehH4100is your heartלְבָבֵ֑ךְle.va.VekhH3824sadH7489?Am I not betterט֣וֹבTovH2896to you thanH4480tenמֵעֲשָׂרָ֖הme.'a.sa.RahH6235sonsבָּנִֽים׃ba.NimH1121?”

9Then Hannahחַנָּ֔הcha.NahH2584roseוַתָּ֣קָםva.Ta.komH6965afterH310eatingאָכְלָ֥ה'a.khe.LahH398and drinkingשָׁתֹ֑הsha.TohH8354in Shilohבְשִׁלֹ֖הve.shi.LohH7887.Now Eliוְעֵלִ֣יve.'e.LiH5941the priestהַכֹּהֵ֗ןha.ko.HenH3548was sittingיֹשֵׁב֙yo.ShevH3427on the seatהַכִּסֵּ֔אha.ki.Se'H3678by the doorpostמְזוּזַ֖תme.zu.ZatH4201ofthe templeהֵיכַ֥לhei.KhalH1964of the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.

10She,greatlyH4751distressedH4751,prayedוַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֥לva.tit.pa.LelH6419to the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068and weptוּבָכֹ֥הu.va.KhohH1058bitterlyתִבְכֶּֽה׃tiv.KehH1058.

11Shemadeוַתִּדֹּ֨רva.ti.DorH5087a vowנֶ֜דֶרNe.derH5088and saidוַתֹּאמַ֗רva.to.MarH559, “O Lordיְהוָ֨הYah.wehH3068of hostsצְבָא֜וֹתtze.va.'otH6635,ifאִם־'im-H518You will indeedרָאֹ֥הra.'OhH7200lookתִרְאֶ֣ה׀tir.'EhH7200on the afflictionבָּעֳנִ֣יbo.'o.NiH6040of Your maidservantאֲמָתֶ֗ךָ'a.ma.Te.khaH519and rememberוּזְכַרְתַּ֙נִי֙u.ze.khar.Ta.niH2142me, and not forgetתִשְׁכַּ֣חtish.KachH7911Your maidservantאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ'a.ma.Te.khaH519,but will giveוְנָתַתָּ֥הve.na.ta.TahH5414Your maidservantלַאֲמָתְךָ֖la.'a.ma.te.KhaH519asonזֶ֣רַעZe.ra'H2233 H376,then I will giveוּנְתַתִּ֤יוu.ne.ta.TivH5414him to the Lordלַֽיהוָה֙la.Yah.wehH3068allכָּל־kol-H3605the daysיְמֵ֣יye.MeiH3117of his lifeH2425, anda razorוּמוֹרָ֖הu.mo.RahH4177shall neverH3808comeיַעֲלֶ֥הya.'a.LehH5927on his headרֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ro.ShoH7218.”

12Now it cameוְהָיָה֙ve.ha.YahH1961about, as shecontinuedהִרְבְּתָ֔הhir.be.TahH7235prayingלְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖לle.hit.pa.LelH6419beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068,that Eliוְעֵלִ֖יve.'e.LiH5941was watchingשֹׁמֵ֥רsho.MerH8104her mouthפִּֽיהָ׃Pi.haH6310.

13As for Hannahוְחַנָּ֗הve.cha.NahH2584,she was speakingמְדַבֶּ֣רֶתme.da.Be.retH1696in her heartלִבָּ֔הּli.BahH3820,onlyH7534her lipsשְׂפָתֶ֣יהָse.fa.Tei.haH8193were movingנָּע֔וֹתna.'otH5128,but her voiceוְקוֹלָ֖הּve.ko.LahH6963was not heardיִשָּׁמֵ֑עַyi.sha.Me.a'H8085.So Eliעֵלִ֖י'e.LiH5941thoughtוַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָvai.yach.she.Ve.haH2803she was drunkלְשִׁכֹּרָֽה׃le.shi.ko.RahH7910.

14Then Eliעֵלִ֔י'e.LiH5941saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to her, “HowH4970longעַד־'ad-H5704 H4970will you makeH7937yourself drunkתִּשְׁתַּכָּרִ֑יןtish.ta.ka.RinH7937?PutH5493awayH5493your wineיֵינֵ֖ךְyei.NekhH3196from you.”

15But Hannahחַנָּ֤הcha.NahH2584repliedוַתַּ֨עַןva.Ta.'anH6030, “NoH369,my lordאֲדֹנִ֔י'a.do.NiH113,I am a womanאִשָּׁ֤ה'i.ShahH802oppressedקְשַׁת־ke.shat-H7186in spiritר֙וּחַ֙Ru.achH7307;I have drunkשָׁתִ֑יתִיsha.Ti.tiH8354neitherלֹ֣אlo'H3808wineוְיַ֥יִןve.Ya.yinH3196norלֹ֣אlo'H3808strongוְשֵׁכָ֖רve.she.KharH7941drinkH7941, but Ihave pouredוָאֶשְׁפֹּ֥ךְva.'esh.PokhH8210out my soulנַפְשִׁ֖יnaf.ShiH5315beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.

16Do notconsiderתִּתֵּן֙ti.TenH5414your maidservantאֲמָ֣תְךָ֔'a.Ma.te.khaH519as a worthlessבְּלִיָּ֑עַלbe.li.Ya.'alH1100womanבַּת־bat-H1323,for I have spokenדִּבַּ֥רְתִּיdi.Bar.tiH1696untilעַד־'ad-H5704nowהֵֽנָּה׃He.nahH2008out of my greatמֵרֹ֥בme.RoH7230concernשִׂיחִ֛יsi.ChiH7879andprovocationוְכַעְסִ֖יve.kha'.SiH3708.”

17Then Eliעֵלִ֛י'e.LiH5941answeredוַיַּ֧עַןvai.Ya.'anH6030and saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Goלְכִ֣יle.KhiH1980in peaceלְשָׁל֑וֹםle.sha.LomH7965;and may the Godוֵאלֹהֵ֣יve.lo.HeiH430of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478grantיִתֵּן֙yi.TenH5414your petitionשֵׁ֣לָתֵ֔ךְshe.la.TekhH7596that you have askedשָׁאַ֖לְתְּsha.'AltH7592of Him.”

18She saidוַתֹּ֕אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Let your maidservantשִׁפְחָתְךָ֛shif.cha.te.KhaH8198findתִּמְצָ֧אtim.Tza'H4672favorחֵ֖ןchenH2580in your sightבְּעֵינֶ֑יךָbe.'ei.Nei.khaH5869.”So the womanהָאִשָּׁ֤הha.'i.ShahH802wentוַתֵּ֨לֶךְva.Te.lekhH1980her wayלְדַרְכָּהּ֙le.dar.KahH1870and ateוַתֹּאכַ֔לva.to.KhalH398, andher faceוּפָנֶ֥יהָu.fa.Nei.haH6440was noלֹא־lo'-H3808longerעֽוֹד׃odH5750sad.
