Context of Micah 5:9
7Then the remnant of Jacob Will be among many peoples Like dew from the Lord, Like showers on vegetation Which do not wait for man Or delay for the sons of men. 8The remnant of Jacob Will be among the nations, Among many peoples Like a lion among the beasts of the forest, Like a young lion among flocks of sheep, Which, if he passes through, Tramples down and tears, And there is none to rescue. Your hand will be lifted up against your adversaries, And all your enemies will be cut off. 10“It will be in that day,” declares the Lord, “That I will cut off your horses from among you And destroy your chariots. 11I will also cut off the cities of your land And tear down all your fortifications.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Their hand shall be lifted up upon their adversaries - The might of the Church is the Might of Christ in her, and the glory of the Church is His from whom it comes and to whom it returns. It is all one, whether this be said to Christ or to the “remnant of Jacob, that is, His Church. Her “enemies” are His, and her‘s only because they are His, and hate her as belonging to Him. They “shall be cut off,” either ceasing to be His enemies, or ceasing to be, as…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-15Verses 7-15 The remnant of Israel, converted to Christ in the primitive times, were among many nations as the drops of dew, and were made instruments in calling a large increase of spiritual worshippers. But to those who neglected or opposed this salvation, they would, as lions, cause terror, their doctrine condemning them. The Lord also declares that he would cause not only the reformation of the Jews, but the purification of the Christian church. In…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-9God's people will have a special role among the world's nations (Genesis 12:3; Exodus 19:4–6). They will lead and not follow (Deuteronomy 28:13), and be as strong as a lion (compare Esther 6:13) as God grants them power over the nations. The Lord will judge their enemies (see Micah 5:15) if they keep rebelling against him. However, the Lord's ultimate wish is to bless the nations, not to curse or destroy them (Genesis 12:3; Jonah 4:11; John 3:16).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. Thine hand shall be lifted up--In Is 26:11 it is Jehovah's hand that is lifted up; here Israel's as Mi 5:8 implies, just as "Zion" is addressed and directed to "beat in pieces many people" (Mi 4:13; compare Is 54:15, 17). For Israel's foes are Jehovah's foes. When her hand is said to be lifted up, it is Jehovah's hand that strikes the foe by her (compare Ex 13:9, with Ex 14:8).Read the comment
