Matthew 4

The Temptation of Jesus

11Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness 2to be tempted by the devil. 2And after He had 3fasted forty days and forty nights, He 4then became hungry. 3And 5the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the 6Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘7Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

5Then the devil took Him into 8the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘9He will command His angels concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’” 7Jesus said to him, “10On the other hand, it is written, ‘11You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

812Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; 9and he said to Him, “13All these things I will give You, if You fall down and 14worship me.” 10Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘15You shall worship the Lord your God, and 16serve Him only.’” 11Then the devil left Him; and behold, 17angels came and began to minister to Him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12Now when Jesus heard that 18John had been taken into custody, 19He withdrew into Galilee; 13and leaving Nazareth, He came and 20settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:15“21The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, 22By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the 23Gentiles--1624The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned.”

1725From that time Jesus began to 26preach and say, “27Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

The First Disciples

1828Now as Jesus was walking by 29the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, 30Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19And He said to them, “31Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21Going on from there He saw two other brothers, 3233James the son of Zebedee, and 34John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Ministry in Galilee

23Jesus was going 35throughout all Galilee, 36teaching in their synagogues and 37proclaiming the 38gospel of the kingdom, and 39healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.

24The news about Him spread 40throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, 41demoniacs, 4243epileptics, 44paralytics; and He healed them. 25Large crowds 45followed Him from Galilee and 46the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from 47beyond the Jordan.
