Commentaries on Job 42:17
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17Job died, being old and full of days - He had seen life in all its varieties; he had risen higher than all the men of the East, and sunk lower in affliction, poverty, and distress, than any other human being that had existed before, or has lived since. He died when he was satisfied with this life; this the word שבע seba implies. He knew the worst and the best of human life; and in himself the whole history of Providence was exemplified and illustrated…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17So Job died, being old and full of days - Having filled up the ordinary term of human life at that period of the world. He reached an honored old age, and when he died was not prematurely cut down. He was “regarded” as an old man. The translators of the Septuagint, at the close of their version, make the following addition: “And it is written that he will rise again with those whom the Lord will raise up.” This is translated out of a Syrian book. “He…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-17Verses 10-17 In the beginning of this book we had Job's patience under his troubles, for an example; here, for our encouragement to follow that example, we have his happy end. His troubles began in Satan's malice, which God restrained; his restoration began in God's mercy, which Satan could not oppose. Mercy did not return when Job was disputing with his friends, but when he was praying for them. God is served and pleased with our warm devotions, not with…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17The patriarchs ("first fathers") Abraham and Isaac also died at an old age (Genesis 25:8; 35:29). Job too lived a long, full life. This fulfilled Eliphaz’s promise (Job 5:26). His promise had its basis on God's general promise (Deuteronomy 6:2; Psalm 91:16). At the end of the book, the ancient Greek Old Testament (Septuagint) adds a note saying that Job will resurrect from the dead at the final resurrection. It also provides information about where and…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1717. full of days--fully sated and contented with all the happiness that life could give him; realizing what Eliphaz had painted as the lot of the godly (Job 5:26; Psa 91:16; Ge 25:8; 35:29). The Septuagint adds, "It is written, that he will rise again with those whom the Lord will raise up." Compare Mt 27:52, 53, from which it perhaps was derived spuriously.Read the comment
