Context of Genesis 37:1
Now Jacob lived in the land where his father had sojourned, in the land of Canaan. 2These are the records of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, when seventeen years of age, was pasturing the flock with his brothers while he was still a youth, along with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives. And Joseph brought back a bad report about them to their father. 3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a varicolored tunic.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1In chapter 36, Esau was increasing in power and wealth. In contrast, Jacob, still waiting for the promise, lived in the land as a foreigner, like his father. He remained a temporary resident with a single family. Worldly greatness often comes more quickly than spiritual greatness. Waiting for the promised spiritual blessing while others prosper tests patience, faith, and perseverance.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-41. Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger--that is, "a sojourner"; "father" used collectively.
