Context of Acts 17:9
7and Jason has welcomed them, and they all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.” 8They stirred up the crowd and the city authorities who heard these things. And when they had received a pledge from Jason and the others, they released them. 10The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

Commentaries on Acts 17:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Taken security - ̔, Having taken what was sufficient, or satisfactory. Sufficient for the present, to prove that the apostles were upright, peaceable, and loyal men; and that Jason and his friends were the like, and would be, at any time, forthcoming to answer for their conduct. Perhaps this is the sense of the phrase in the text.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9And when they had taken security of Jason - This is an expression taken from courts, and means that Jason and the other gave satisfaction to the magistrates for the good conduct of Paul and Silas, or became responsible for it. Whether it was by depositing a sum of money, and by thus giving bail, is not quite clear. The sense is, that they did it in accordance with the Roman usages, and gave sufficient security for the good conduct of Paul and Silas…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-9The charges did not stand up when the officials examined them. So they released Jason and the other believers after they paid a bond (money given as a promise to return if required). Luke shows that Christianity was not a political threat to the Roman Empire. For this reason, he argues that it should be treated as a permitted religion and not attacked for political reasons.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-95-9. the Jews ... moved with envy--seeing their influence undermined by this stranger. lewd fellows of the baser sort--better, perhaps, "worthless market people," that is, idle loungers about the market-place, of indifferent character. gathered a company--rather, "having raised a mob." assaulted the house of Jason--with whom Paul and Silas abode (Ac 17:7), one of Paul's kinsmen, apparently (Ro 16:21), and from his name, which was sometimes used as a Greek…Read the comment
