1 Thessalonians 4
New American Standard Bible 1995
Sanctification and Love
11Finally then, 2brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to 34walk and 5please God (just as you actually do 6walk), that you 7excel still more. 2For you know what commandments we gave you 8by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you 9abstain from 10sexual immorality; 4that 11each of you know how to 12possess his own 1314vessel in sanctification and 15honor, 5not in 1617lustful passion, like the Gentiles who 18do not know God; 6and that no man transgress and 19defraud his brother 20in the matter because 21the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also 22told you before and solemnly warned you. 7For 23God has not called us for 24the purpose of impurity, but 25in sanctification. 8So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who 26gives His Holy Spirit to you.
9Now as to the 27love of the brethren, you 28have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are 29taught by God to love one another; 10for indeed 30you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, to 31excel still more, 11and to make it your ambition 32to lead a quiet life and 33attend to your own business and 34work with your hands, just as we commanded you, 12so that you will 3536behave properly toward 37outsiders and 3839not be in any need.
Those Who Died in Christ
13But 40we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who 41are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do 42the rest who have 43no hope. 14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, 44even so God will bring with Him 45those who have fallen asleep 46in Jesus. 15For this we say to you 47by the word of the Lord, that 48we who are alive 49and remain until 50the coming of the Lord, will not precede 51those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord 52Himself 53will descend from heaven with a 5455shout, with the voice of 56the archangel and with the 57trumpet of God, and 58the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then 59we who are alive 60and remain will be 61caught up together with them 62in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always 63be with the Lord. 18Therefore comfort one another with these words.
