Context of 1 Samuel 3:3
1Now the boy Samuel ministered to the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation. 2And it came to pass at that time, while Eli was lying down in his place, and when his eyes had begun to grow so dim that he could not see, and before the lamp of God went out in the tabernacle of the Lord where the ark of God was, and while Samuel was lying down, 4that the Lord called Samuel. And he answered, “Here I am!” 5So he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” And he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” And he went and lay down.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3The priests had to keep God's lamp burning all night (Exodus 27:20–21; 30:7–8). Samuel sleeping near the ark shows his closeness to God's presence and purpose, unlike Eli and his sons.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord--The "temple" seems to have become the established designation of the tabernacle, and the time indicated was towards the morning twilight, as the lamps were extinguished at sunrise (see Le 6:12, 13).Read the comment
