Context of Mark 11:23

21Peter remembered ⌞what Jesus had said⌟, so he said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has dried up.” 22Jesus said to them, “Have faith in God! I can guarantee this truth: This is what will be done for someone who doesn’t doubt but believes what he says will happen: He can say to this mountain, ‘Be uprooted and thrown into the sea,’ and it will be done for him. 24That’s why I tell you to have faith that you have already received whatever you pray for, and it will be yours. 25Whenever you pray, forgive anything you have against anyone. Then your Father in heaven will forgive your failures.”

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11-26Verses 11-26 See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 21:18-22. Mark 11:11 Into the temple - Not into the edifice properly called “the temple,” but into the “courts” which surrounded the principal edifice. Our Saviour, not being of the tribe of Levi, was not permitted to enter into the holy or most holy place; and when, therefore, it is said that he went into the “temple,” it is always to be understood of the “courts” surrounding the temple. • Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-26Verses 19-26 The disciples could not think why that fig-tree should so soon wither away; but all wither who reject Christ; it represented the state of the Jewish church. We should rest in no religion that does not make us fruitful in good works. Christ taught them from hence to pray in faith. It may be applied to that mighty faith with which all true Christians are endued, and which does wonders in spiritual things. It justifies us, and so removes…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22-23Truly I tell you: Jesus is emphasizing the importance of his words. this mountain: This probably refers to the Temple Mount, not the Mount of Olives. The judgment of the temple is the main focus in 11:12–25. Mark 12:9 will mention it again, and 13:1–37 describes it in detail. The reference to destroying the temple would later be raised at the trial (14:58) and crucifixion (15:29) of Jesus.Read the comment

From the nature of the case supposed--that they might wish a mountain removed and cast into the sea, a thing far removed from anything which they could be thought actually to desire--it is plain that not physical but moral obstacles to the progress of His kingdom were in the Redeemer's view, and that…Read the comment
