Context of 2 Corinthians 8:7
5They did more than we had expected. First, they gave themselves to the Lord and to us, since this was God’s will. 6This led us to urge Titus to finish his work of God’s kindness among you in the same way as he had already started it. Indeed, the more your faith, your ability to speak, your knowledge, your dedication, and your love for us increase, the more we want you to participate in this work of God’s kindness. 8I’m not commanding you, but I’m testing how genuine your love is by pointing out the dedication of others. 9You know about the kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was rich, yet for your sake he became poor in order to make you rich through his poverty.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7As ye abound in every thing - See the note on 1 Corinthians 1:5. In faith, crediting the whole testimony of God; in utterance, ͅ, in doctrine, knowing what to teach: knowledge of God's will, and prudence to direct you in teaching and doing it; in diligence, to amend all that is wrong among you, and to do what is right; and in love to us, whom now ye prize as the apostles of the Lord, and your pastors in him. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Therefore as ye abound in everything - see the note, 1 Corinthians 1:5. Paul never hesitated to commend Christians where it could be done with truth; and the fact that they were eminent in some of the Christian duties and graces, he makes the ground of the exhortation that they would abound in all. From those who had so many eminent characteristics of true religion he had a right to expect much; and he therefore exhorts them to manifest a symmetry of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-9Verses 7-9 Faith is the root; and as without faith it is not possible to please God, He 11:6, so those who abound in faith, will abound in other graces and good works also; and this will work and show itself by love. Great talkers are not always the best doers; but these Corinthians were diligent to do, as well as to know and talk well. To all these good things the apostle desires them to add this grace also, to abound in charity to the poor. The best…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7This verse is central to Paul's teaching on Christian giving (8:1–9:15). The Corinthians were known for their spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 1:5–7; 14:12). Now, they should lead in the generous act of giving, which shows true spirituality (see 1 Corinthians 13:1–13). God had been generous to the Corinthians, so they should help the Jewish believers in need (2 Corinthians 9:13). This would show unity in Christ.Read the comment
