Context of 2 Corinthians 8:7
5and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. 6Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also. 8I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. 9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Therefore as ye abound in everything - see the note, 1 Corinthians 1:5. Paul never hesitated to commend Christians where it could be done with truth; and the fact that they were eminent in some of the Christian duties and graces, he makes the ground of the exhortation that they would abound in all. From those who had so many eminent characteristics of true religion he had a right to expect much; and he therefore exhorts them to manifest a symmetry of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-9Verses 7-9 Faith is the root; and as without faith it is not possible to please God, He 11:6, so those who abound in faith, will abound in other graces and good works also; and this will work and show itself by love. Great talkers are not always the best doers; but these Corinthians were diligent to do, as well as to know and talk well. To all these good things the apostle desires them to add this grace also, to abound in charity to the poor. The best…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7This verse is central to Paul's teaching on Christian giving (8:1–9:15). The Corinthians were known for their spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 1:5–7; 14:12). Now, they should lead in the generous act of giving, which shows true spirituality (see 1 Corinthians 13:1–13). God had been generous to the Corinthians, so they should help the Jewish believers in need (2 Corinthians 9:13). This would show unity in Christ.Read the comment
