Context of Hebrews 3:5
3We know that someone who builds a house is more important than the house itself. In the same way, we should praise Jesus more than we praise Moses, because Jesus is greater. 4Every house has someone who built it. But God is the one who has built all things. We say that Moses served God well, like a servant in God's house. He took care of all God's people. In this way, Moses showed clearly the message that God would speak later. 6But Christ serves in God's house as a son, not as a servant. He is the leader of God's people today. And we are God's people. We belong to his house if we continue to believe in Christ. We must be brave. We must continue to show people clearly that we trust God. He will do what he has promised to do. 7God's Holy Spirit says this: ‘You must listen when you hear God speak today.

Commentaries on Hebrews 3:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5As a servant - The fidelity of Moses was the fidelity of a servant; he was not the framer of that Church or house; he was employed, under God, to arrange and order it: he was steward to the Builder and Owner. For a testimony of those things - Every ordinance under the law was typical; every thing bore a testimony to the things which were to be spoken after; i.e. to Jesus Christ, his suffering, death, and the glory which should follow; and to his Gospel in…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Moses was faithful as a servant - Not as the head of the dispensation; not as having originated it; but as in the employ and under the direction of its great Founder and Author - the Messiah. As such a servant he deserves all the honor for fidelity which has ever been claimed for him, but it cannot be the honor which is due to him who is at the head of the family or house. Paul “assumed” that Moses was a “servant,” and argued on that supposition…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-6Jesus deserves more glory for two reasons: A person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself. The Messiah is the one who builds God’s house (see 2 Samuel 7:13). This implies that Moses is part of the house (God’s people) that God has built. While Moses was a servant in God’s house, Christ, as the Son, is the heir in charge of God’s entire house. Sons have a higher status than household servants.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. faithful in all his house--that is in all God's house (He 3:4). servant--not here the Greek for "slave," but "a ministering attendant"; marking the high office of Moses towards God, though inferior to Christ, a kind of steward. for a testimony of, &c.--in order that he might in his typical institutions give "testimony" to Israel "of the things" of the Gospel "which were to be spoken afterwards" by Christ (He 8:5; 9:8, 23; 10:1).Read the comment
