Every one of us needs to do his best. We shall gain an experience of much value, if we take heed to the instruction of God’s Word, lest at any time we should let it slip from the memory. We should carefully treasure the instruction given by Christ in the Word, from the beginning of the Old Testament to the close of the New Testament. Let us heed His instruction: “For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard Him?” “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; who was faithful to Him that appointed Him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.” [Hebrews 2:2, 3; 3:1, 2.]Hebrews 3:1-6

For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honor than the house. For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. As “partakers of the heavenly calling,” let us “consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; who was faithful,” the apostle Paul declares, “as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Wherefore as the Holy Ghost saith, Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness. ... Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end.” [Hebrews 3:1, 2, 6-8, 12-14.]Hebrews 3:1-15

Study the Bible, brethren. “Today if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest. Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end; While it is said, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.” [Hebrews 3:7-15.]13LtMs, Lt 97, 1898, par. 7
“Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” [Verses 12, 13.] Satan will seek to lead away from safe paths into the ways of suspicion, distrust, evil surmising, evil thinking, and evil speaking. God’s servants who are engaged in different lines of the work should not have an interest only in the one special line that they are handling. Those whom God has appointed to different lines of work are not to be suspicious. They are not to work in secret. They are to feel that all should have a part in the spiritual house, in the building of a holy temple for God.13LtMs, Lt 97, 1898, par. 8
“Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus: Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.” [Verses 1-3.] Because of the unbelief manifested toward Christ, the originator and foundation of the whole Jewish economy, a heavier retribution will come upon men than befell unbelieving Israel in the wilderness. Moses was the prophet by whom God communicated to the church in the wilderness: but great as was Moses, a greater than he is the Son of God, who builded the house.Hebrews 3:1-16

“For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end.” [Verses 7-14.] This you have not done. And because you have been regarded as a man of business ability, your influence has led others in wrong paths. I beg of you to stop and consider. Do not make a raid on your brethren. Leave them with God. Take hold of your own case. The question is one of life or death for you. Remember that if God is merciful to you, He will be merciful to others.19LtMs, Lt 209, 1904, par. 13
Remember that to a large degree you have originated the difficulties that have reacted on you. Improve the opportunity offered you to turn to God in repentance. You are not to convince others of their wrongdoing, but to take yourself in hand, and seek the Lord with all the powers of your being. “Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. For some, when they had heard, did provoke.” [Verses 15, 16.] Yes, they talked in a heated, excited manner. He “hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever.” [Verse 6.] In the book of Hebrews in studying the priesthood, we find that the priests were those who presented to the Father their own case, and also the cases of others. They were to work diligently for the salvation of souls. But there are some today, even among those who are preaching the gospel, who need a new conversion. Chapter 34—The Word Made Flesh
1SM 247.1
Christ did not make believe take human nature; He did verily take it. He did in reality possess human nature. “As the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same” (Hebrews 2:14). He was the son of Mary; He was of the seed of David according to human descent. He is declared to be a man, even the Man Christ Jesus. “This man,” writes Paul, “was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house” (Hebrews 3:3).Hebrews 3:4

We may indeed say, “Thy presence is our security, our treasure, our glory, our joy. How can the duties of life be discharged without Thee? How can its trials be endured without Thy presence?” Do we pray that Christ will go where we go, and dwell where we dwell? If we can live without Christ in this world, He will live without us in the better world. But if we cling to Him by living faith, saying with Jacob, “I will not let thee go” (Genesis 32:26); if we entreat, “Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me,” (Psalm 51:11), the promise is to us, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 3:5. We cannot afford to live in neglect of the great salvation offered to us upon such liberal terms. The knowledge of the claims of God as our Father will keep us from offending Him. This will make us anxious to please Him. As His children we must walk in the light, walk worthy of God, who hath called us unto glory and His immortal kingdom.Hebrews 3:5-6

Your work is to be of a different order. A most solemn, substantial work is to be done in the whole world. The last message of warning is to be given. You are appointed to carry the banner as God’s sentinel, not only among the lowest class, but the highest as well. Upon this banner is inscribed the third angel’s message. Hold the banner firm. Bear it high. Let no one take it from your hand. If you would triumph with the third angel’s message, you are to be a representative for the truth for this time. Your rest and peace and prosperity, your triumph at last, depend upon your holding the beginning of your confidence firm unto the end. Hebrews 3:5, 6.Hebrews 3:5-13

In view of this instruction, how important it is that we do not devote our time to faultfinding or criticizing, but that we receive the divine truth into our hearts, that they may break before God. The broken heart and the contrite spirit God will receive. We must not base our salvation upon supposition; we must know of a surety that Christ is formed within, the hope of glory. We must know for ourselves that the Spirit of God is abiding in our hearts and that we can hold communion with God. Then if He should come to us quickly, if by any chance our life should suddenly be ended, we should be ready to meet our God. Now, while it is called today, let us set our house in order. “Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts as in the provocation.” [Hebrews 3:7, 8.] Because of their unbelief of God’s word, the children of Israel who left Egypt perished in the wilderness. God grant that we may not through unbelief fail of entering into the promised land. Let us keep step with Christ.Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students

How many who know the truth for this time are working in harmony with its principles? It is true that something is being done; but more, far more, should have been done. The work is accumulating, and the time for doing it is diminishing. All should now be burning and shining lights, and yet many are failing to keep their lamps supplied with the oil of grace, trimmed and burning, so that light may gleam out today. Too many are counting on a long stretch of tomorrow, but this is a mistake. Let everyone be educated in such a way as to show the importance of the special work for today. Let everyone labor for God and for souls; let each show wisdom and never be found in idleness, waiting for someone to set him to work. Thus the enemy seeks to overcome humanity. And how helpless man is when he places himself in the enemy’s hands. The effort that would have placed him on vantage ground he never made. God’s call of mercy sounded in his ears, but he did not make decided efforts to obey. Every additional ray of light hardened his heart against increased light. The spell of delay was upon him, and he said to the Spirit, “Go thy way, for this time, and when I have a more convenient season, I will call for thee.” [Acts 24:25.] He folded his hands, content that at any time he could, if he chose, obey the call. But if not obeyed, the calls of the Holy Spirit to the soul leave less and less impression. Each may leave some impression, but it is soon forgotten. The next opportunity impressed him less. He felt less inclination to break away from worldly interests. He did not realize the importance of making a change, of heeding the word, “Today, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, and in the day of temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.” [Psalm 95:7-9; Hebrews 3:7-9.]Hebrews 3:7-10

For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him.” [Hebrews 2:1-3.] “Wherefore as the Holy Ghost saith, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their hearts; and they have not known my ways.” [Hebrews 3:7-10.] This chapter is a lesson for both teachers and students. These things are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.Hebrews 3:7-13

Elder Smith has had poor companions and supporters. He sat in silence. God pity these men who are blinded and deceived. Meetings that should have been meetings of confession and humiliation have been meetings of self-justification. A spirit of coldness, of irreverence, of lightness was with many. And, “while it is called Today,” “if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation ... in the wilderness.” Hebrews 3:13, 7, 8. God does not make a decree that men’s hearts shall become hard and unimpressible. It is the resistance of light, a refusal to hear the voice of warning and reproof, which strengthens the soul in a position of resistance. He is sowing the seed of resistance, which harvest he must reap in hardness of heart. Men harden their own hearts in their impenitence. They have sown the seed; they reap what they have sown. The precious opportunity that might have aroused the church and brought them to a sense of their true state is lost by the unconsecrated influence of men who will not humble their hearts before God.Hebrews 3:7-14

Mark the words “deceitfulness of sin.” [Verse 13.] Satan always presents his temptations under the guise of goodness. Beware that you yield not to them. One violation of straightforward truthfulness prepares the way for the second violation, and wrongs are repeated until the heart of unbelief becomes hardened and the conscience loses its sensitiveness. Let us humble our hearts before God and ask Him to forgive us for speaking words of unbelief, words that cast a reflection on Him who is too wise to err and too good to do harm.18LtMs, Ms 9, 1903, par. 27

Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight; but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. Seeing then that we have an high priest that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” [Hebrews 3:14-19; 4:1, 2, 11-16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

The Lord has given us many warnings, that show us that to refuse light sent us from God, is to refuse Christ. In these last days God’s people will be exposed to the very same dangers as were ancient Israel. Those who will not receive the warnings that God gives will fall into the same perils as did ancient Israel and come short of entering into rest through unbelief. Ancient Israel suffered calamities on account of their unsanctified hearts and unsubmitted wills. Their final rejection as a nation was a result of their own unbelief, self-confidence, impenitence, blindness of mind, and hardness of heart. In their history we have a danger signal lifted before us. “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God ... How can a man who has a beam in his own eye see clearly to pick out the mote that is in his brother’s eye? Yet this is a picture of your condition, and shows the manner in which you have acted in the Sydney church. We read that Christ was hindered from doing the mighty works of God because of the unbelief of the people. The record states that when He visited His own country, “He did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” [Matthew 13:58.] This is the reason that mighty works are not done in the Sydney church. God speaks to you in Sydney, saying, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.” [Hebrews 3:12.] Unbelief always results in separation from God; men refuse to hear His voice, and as a result the heart is hardened.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

The people to whom these woes were addressed had been privileged to have great light; but the light had been unimproved. If heavenly messages are disregarded, if the love of God is unheeded, the sin of men is the greater. This is the great sin of the world that light has come into the world, and that men have chosen darkness rather than light. The Spirit of God has been constantly drawing the hearts of men; but as light has shown upon their path, Satan has falsely represented the truth, and has presented error in an attractive light. The truth has been unpopular, for it has not been easy to deny self, to lift the cross and follow Jesus. When conviction comes to the mind, the Holy Spirit is striving, and calling upon men saying, “Behold now is the day of salvation. Harden not your hearts.” [2 Corinthians 6:2; Hebrews 3:8.]Hebrews 3:9-14

Says the apostle Paul, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.” Hebrews 3:12. In view of all that God has wrought for us, our faith should be strong, active, and enduring. Instead of murmuring and complaining, the language of our hearts should be, “Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” Psalm 103:1, 2.Steps to Christ

Because they cannot fathom all its mysteries, the skeptic and the infidel reject God’s word; and not all who profess to believe the Bible are free from danger on this point. The apostle says, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.” Hebrews 3:12. It is right to study closely the teachings of the Bible and to search into “the deep things of God” so far as they are revealed in Scripture. 1 Corinthians 2:10. While “the secret things belong unto the Lord our God,” “those things which are revealed belong unto us.” Deuteronomy 29:29. But it is Satan’s work to pervert the investigative powers of the mind. A certain pride is mingled with the consideration of Bible truth, so that men feel impatient and defeated if they cannot explain every portion of Scripture to their satisfaction. It is too humiliating to them to acknowledge that they do not understand the inspired words. They are unwilling to wait patiently until God shall see fit to reveal the truth to them. They feel that their unaided human wisdom is sufficient to enable them to comprehend the Scripture, and failing to do this, they virtually deny its authority. It is true that many theories and doctrines popularly supposed to be derived from the Bible have no foundation in its teaching, and indeed are contrary to the whole tenor of inspiration. These things have been a cause of doubt and perplexity to many minds. They are not, however, chargeable to God’s word, but to man’s perversion of it.That I May Know Him

Those things which have been in the past will be in the future. Satan will make music a snare by the way in which it is conducted. God calls upon His people, who have the light before them in the Word and in the Testimonies, to read and consider, and to take heed. Clear and definite instruction has been given in order that all may understand. But the itching desire to originate something new results in strange doctrines, and largely destroys the influence of those who would be a power for good if they held firm the beginning of their confidence in the truth the Lord had given them. The seed sown by the wayside represents the word of God as it falls upon the heart of an inattentive hearer. Like the hard-beaten path, trodden down by the feet of men and beasts, is the heart that becomes a highway for the world’s traffic, its pleasures and sins. Absorbed in selfish aims and sinful indulgences, the soul is “hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” Hebrews 3:13. The spiritual faculties are paralyzed. Men hear the word, but understand it not. They do not discern that it applies to themselves. They do not realize their need or their danger. They do not perceive the love of Christ, and they pass by the message of His grace as something that does not concern them.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Every hour of life is to be filled with good deeds, with a diligent cultivation of the entrusted talents. We all need to cultivate tenderness and love for each other, and when we are converted we shall do this. All who enter the kingdom of God must strive most earnestly to be commandment keepers. They must be brought into harmony with the law of God. “Work while it is called today.” [See John 9:4; Hebrews 3:13.] This is the lesson each must learn. We must constantly watch and strive, fighting manfully the good fight of faith, never ceasing in our efforts to run the race with patience, that we may receive the prize. It is only by earnest endeavor that we can win eternal life.Christ’s Object Lessons

Those who have pursued this course, linking up with unbelievers, are not following the way of the Lord. He desires us to remain forever a peculiar people, holding “the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end.” [Hebrews 3:14.] He desires us to stand as representatives of His and of His special message of truth in the last days of this earth’s history. Every man who is renewed by the grace of Christ will be conscious of his own dangers and sinfulness. The light of life shines amid the darkness, and the darkness comprehends it and is afraid and turns to the light. He sees his own sins and repents with brokenness of heart, and confessions are made that testify to the genuineness of the work. What a work might have been done at that Conference that was not done, because those who heard the warnings would not humble their hearts before God. Self-examination is not only a safeguard but a duty. The Word of God points out the defects of the human mind, and the thoughts and actions which God will not sanction. We are to look at our actions through the Word of God, that we may know whether we are in the faith, holding “the beginning of our confidence”—in the past leadings of God—“firm unto the end” [Hebrews 3:14], not according to our individual choice and inclinations, but with hearts that desire to be improved and set in order, that the wrongs might be corrected.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Leaving the royal courts of heaven, Christ came to our world to represent the character of His Father, and thus help humanity to return to their loyalty. The image of Satan was upon men, and Christ came that He might bring to them moral power and efficiency. He came as a helpless babe, bearing the humanity we bear. “As the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same” [Hebrews 3:14]. He could not come in the form of an angel, for unless He met man as man, and testified by His connection with God that divine power was not given to Him in a different way to what it will be given to us, He could not be a perfect example for us.From Trials to Triumph

The greatest care should be exercised by believers to place themselves in close connection with God and with those who have been taught of God. It is painful to see those who have believed present truth walking into Satan’s net. There are so many professors of the truth who have not Christ in the heart; therefore their religious experience is valueless. The Christian course is a battle and a march. The struggle must be lifelong and must be prosecuted with all that restless energy which the immense interest involved demands. For we are partakers of Christ and of all the benefits He has to bestow, “if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end,” maintaining to the last our Christian integrity and purity. [Hebrews 3:14.] “Ye therefore beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.” 2 Peter 3:17. We must consider Him who hath endured the contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest we become weary and faint in our minds. “For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end.” [Hebrews 3:14.] “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” In perfect patience we must possess our souls. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” [Hebrews 4:15, 16.] This inspired Word is the voice of God to you and to me. He wastes no time in studying proprieties of speech or attitude, but cries in his last chance, “Jesus of Nazareth have mercy on me.” He was not only blind of natural sight, but he was a debased sinner; he asks for mercy, such as Christ is pleased to give the guilty. If he has that mercy, he knows that he has everything, and he is determined to have this mercy from Jesus, which means so much to him. When Jesus calls him to come, he does not wait a second bidding, he waits not to be led. He rushes in his blindness in the direction of the voice. He is ready to risk everything, only to hear the blessed words of sins forgiven. Jesus heard the request and answered it. Blind Bartimaeus received his sight and followed Jesus. The beams of righteousness shine into the darkened chambers of his mind, and light, happiness, [and] sight restored, he goes on his way rejoicing. The darkness of the long night of years is rolled back. A new world opens before him, and hope and consolation, so sweet and grateful, has come to his heart. He is made, through faith in Christ, a partaker of the divine nature. I present this case before you; I entreat of you to seize this opportunity, now, while it is called today. “If ye will hear my voice, harden not your hearts.” [See Hebrews 3:15.] There has been, by your wife, fasting and prayer and humiliation for many years. For notwithstanding her hereditary tendencies to complain and find fault, she has ever listened to the voice of God in chiding and reproof and humbled her soul in the dust at His feet. Others have hoped and prayed for you, Oh so earnestly, that God would restore to you the joys of His salvation; that you might be restored to sight, restored to yourself, rescued from the terrible blindness of sin which has blackened your soul.Hebrews 3:19

It was not the will of God that the coming of Christ should be thus delayed. God did not design that His people, Israel, should wander forty years in the wilderness. He promised to lead them directly to the land of Canaan, and establish them there a holy, healthy, happy people. But those to whom it was first preached, went not in “because of unbelief” (Hebrews 3:19). Their hearts were filled with murmuring, rebellion, and hatred, and He could not fulfill His covenant with them. The Great Controversy

It was not the will of God that Israel should wander forty years in the wilderness; He desired to lead them directly to the land of Canaan and establish them there, a holy, happy people. But “they could not enter in because of unbelief.” Hebrews 3:19. Because of their backsliding and apostasy they perished in the desert, and others were raised up to enter the Promised Land. In like manner, it was not the will of God that the coming of Christ should be so long delayed and His people should remain so many years in this world of sin and sorrow. But unbelief separated them from God. As they refused to do the work which He had appointed them, others were raised up to proclaim the message. In mercy to the world, Jesus delays His coming, that sinners may have an opportunity to hear the warning and find in Him a shelter before the wrath of God shall be poured out.The Great Controversy (1888 ed.)

“So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto you was the gospel preached, as well as unto them, but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” [Hebrews 3:19; 4:1, 2.]EGW Writings — Ellen G. “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus” (Hebrews 3:1). Study Christ. Study His character, feature by feature. He is our pattern that we are required to copy in our lives and our characters, else we fail to represent Jesus, but present to the world a spurious copy. Do not imitate any man, for men are defective in habits, in speech, in manners, in character. I present before you the Man Christ Jesus. You must individually know Him as your Saviour before you can study Him as your pattern and your example. Said Paul, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.... Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them” (Romans 1:16-19).Our High Calling

True religion is the imitation of Christ. Those who follow Christ will deny self; take up the cross, and walk in His footsteps. Following Christ means obedience to all His commandments. No soldier can be said to follow his commander unless he obeys orders. Christ is our Model. To copy Jesus, full of love and tenderness and compassion, will require that we draw near to Him daily. O how God has been dishonored by His professed representatives! The first three chapters of Hebrews are presented to me as of great importance to enlighten the eyes and to direct the life.
