Context of Luke 9:45
43And they were all astonished at the greatness of God. While everyone was amazed at all the things he was doing, he told his disciples, 44“Let these words sink in: The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” But they did not understand this statement; it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it. 46An argument started among them about who was the greatest of them. 47But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts, took a little child and had him stand next to him.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 45It was hid from them - They had imbibed the common notions of the Jews that he was to be a prince and a conqueror, to deliver the nation. They could not understand how that could be, if he was soon to be delivered into the hands of his enemies to die. In this way it was hid from them - not by God, but by their previous false belief. And from this we may learn that the plainest truths of the Bible are unintelligible to many because they have embraced some…Read the comment

A little child is the emblem by which Christ teaches us simplicity and humility. What greater honour can any man attain to in this world, than to be received by men as a messenger of God and Christ; and to have God and Christ own themselves received and welcomed in him!
