Context of Luke 9:45
43Everyone was amazed to see God’s wonderful power. Everyone was amazed at all the things that Jesus was doing. So he said to his disciples, 44“Listen carefully to what I say. The Son of Man will be betrayed and handed over to people.” They didn’t know what he meant. The meaning was hidden from them so that they didn’t understand it. Besides, they were afraid to ask him about what he had said. 46A discussion started among them about who would be the greatest. 47Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he took a little child and had him stand beside him.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 45It was hid from them - They had imbibed the common notions of the Jews that he was to be a prince and a conqueror, to deliver the nation. They could not understand how that could be, if he was soon to be delivered into the hands of his enemies to die. In this way it was hid from them - not by God, but by their previous false belief. And from this we may learn that the plainest truths of the Bible are unintelligible to many because they have embraced some…Read the comment

What greater honour can any man attain to in this world, than to be received by men as a messenger of God and Christ; and to have God and Christ own themselves received and welcomed in him!
