Context of Luke 9:45
43Everybody was very surprised at what they saw. They knew that God was very powerful. The people were still thinking with surprise about everything that Jesus was doing. Then he began to talk to his disciples. 44He said to them, ‘Do not forget what I am telling you now. Soon they will deliver the Son of Man to powerful people to kill him.’ But they did not understand what Jesus had said. Its meaning was a secret to them, so they could not understand. But they were afraid to ask Jesus, ‘What do you mean?’ 46Then the disciples began to argue with each other. They argued about which of them was the most important. 47Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he took a child and he made him stand there at his side.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 45It was hid from them - They had imbibed the common notions of the Jews that he was to be a prince and a conqueror, to deliver the nation. They could not understand how that could be, if he was soon to be delivered into the hands of his enemies to die. In this way it was hid from them - not by God, but by their previous false belief. And from this we may learn that the plainest truths of the Bible are unintelligible to many because they have embraced some…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-50Verses 43-50 This prediction of Christ's sufferings was plain enough, but the disciples would not understand it, because it agreed not with their notions. A little child is the emblem by which Christ teaches us simplicity and humility. What greater honour can any man attain to in this world, than to be received by men as a messenger of God and Christ; and to have God and Christ own themselves received and welcomed in him! If ever any society of Christians…Read the comment
