Context of John 19:7

5So Yeshua came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. “Behold, the Man!” Pilate said to them. 6When the ruling kohanim and officers saw Him, they yelled out, “Execute Him! Execute Him!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and execute Him! For I don’t find a case against Him.” The Judean leaders answered him, “We have a law, and according to the Torah He must die, because He claimed to be Ben-Elohim!” 8When Pilate heard this word, he became even more fearful. 9He went into the Praetorium again and said to Yeshua, “Where are You from?” But Yeshua gave him no answer.

Commentaries on John 19:7

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7We have a law - In Leviticus 24:14-16, we find that blasphemers of God were to be put to death; and the chief priests having charged Jesus with blasphemy, they therefore voted that he deserved to die. See Matthew 26:65, Matthew 26:66. They might refer also to the law against false prophets, Deuteronomy 18:20. The Son of God - It is certain that the Jews understood this in a very peculiar sense. When Christ called himself the Son of God, they understood it…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7We have a law - The law respecting blasphemy, Leviticus 24:16; Deuteronomy 13:1-5. They had arraigned Jesus on that charge before the Sanhedrin, and condemned him for it, Matthew 26:63-65. But this was not the charge on which they had arraigned him before Pilate. They had accused him of sedition, Luke 23:2. On this charge they were now convinced that they could not get Pilate to condemn him. He declared him innocent. Still bent on his ruin, and resolved…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7During the trial before Caiaphas, the charge of blasphemy (calling himself the Son of God) was determined to be the true crime Jesus had committed (see Mark 14:61–65). The leaders had already tried to set Jesus against Roman interests and they would do it again (John 18:33; 19:12). Now they challenged the governor in different way. Pilate had to maintain peace by enforcing local law, even if it did not matter to Rome. Claiming to be God's son was not…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-76-7. When the chief priests ... saw him, they cried out--their fiendish rage kindling afresh at the sight of Him. Crucify him, crucify him--(See Mr 15:14). Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him; for I find no fault in him--as if this would relieve him of the responsibility of the deed, who, by surrendering Him, incurred it all!Read the comment
