Context of Mark 15:39
37But letting out a loud cry, Yeshua breathed His last. 38Then the curtain of the Temple was split in two, from top to bottom. When the centurion, who was standing in front of Him, saw the way Yeshua breathed His last, he said, “This Man really was the Son of God!” 40There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Miriam from Magdala, Miriam the mother of Jacob the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41They would follow Him and serve Him when He was in the Galilee. Many other women who had gone up together with Him to Jerusalem were there also.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-41Verses 33-41 There was a thick darkness over the land, from noon until three in the afternoon. The Jews were doing their utmost to extinguish the Sun of Righteousness. The darkness signified the cloud which the human soul of Christ was under, when he was making it an offering for sin. He did not complain that his disciples forsook him, but that his Father forsook him. In this especially he was made sin for us. When Paul was to be offered as a sacrifice…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 39The centurion: The Latin word centurion refers to an officer in charge of 100 men. Jesus as the Son of God was announced by many voices. God declared it(1:11; 9:7). Demons also recognized it (1:24, 34; 3:11; 5:7). Mark states it at the beginning of the Gospel (1:1). Jesus himself speaks about it (12:6; 13:32; 14:61–62).
