Context of Romans 11:5
3“Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.” 4And do you remember God’s reply? He said, “No, I have 7,000 others who have never bowed down to Baal!” It is the same today, for a few of the people of Israel have remained faithful because of God’s grace—his undeserved kindness in choosing them. 6And since it is through God’s kindness, then it is not by their good works. For in that case, God’s grace would not be what it really is—free and undeserved. 7So this is the situation: Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. A few have—the ones God has chosen—but the hearts of the rest were hardened.

Though the mass of the nation was to be rejected, yet it did not follow that all were to be excluded from the favor of God. As in the time of Elijah, when all appeared to be dark, and all the nation, except one, seemed to have become apostate, yet there was a considerable number of the true friends of God; so in the time of Paul, though the nation had rejected their Messiah, though, as a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5a remnant: Paul refers back to the Old Testament idea of the remnant that he used in 9:27–29. A remnant refers to a small group of people who remain faithful when many others do not. This faithful group of Israelites shows that God continues to keep his promises. It also shows that God remains faithful to his people.Read the comment
