Context of Luke 22:37

35Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out to preach the Good News and you did not have money, a traveler’s bag, or an extra pair of sandals, did you need anything?” “No,” they replied. 36“But now,” he said, “take your money and a traveler’s bag. And if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one! For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be fulfilled: ‘He was counted among the rebels.’ Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.” 38“Look, Lord,” they replied, “we have two swords among us.” “That’s enough,” he said. 39Then, accompanied by the disciples, Jesus left the upstairs room and went as usual to the Mount of Olives.

Commentaries on Luke 22:37

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 37Must yet be accomplished - Probably meaning that, though this prophecy did refer to some particular matter in the time of the prophet, yet it farther ( ) related to Christ, and could not have its complete accomplishment but in his crucifixion as a criminal. For the things concerning me have an end - As if he had said, My work is now almost done; yours is only beginning; I am now about to be crucified and numbered with the transgressors; think what will be…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 37This that is written - See the notes at Isaiah 53:12. Was reckoned among the transgressors - Not reckoned as a transgressor, but “among or with” them - that is, he was treated as transgressors are. He was put to death in their company, and as he “would have been” if he had been a transgressor. He was innocent, holy, harmless, and undefiled, Hebrews 7:26. God knew this always, and could not “think” of him, or make him “to be” otherwise than he was; yet it…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-38Verses 21-38 How unbecoming is the worldly ambition of being the greatest, to the character of a follower of Jesus, who took upon him the form of a servant, and humbled himself to the death of the cross! In the way to eternal happiness, we must expect to be assaulted and sifted by Satan. If he cannot destroy, he will try to disgrace or distress us. Nothing more certainly forebodes a fall, in a professed follower of Christ, than self-confidence, with…Read the comment
