Context of Acts 5:14
12The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14And believers were the more added to the Lord - Believers: Those who credited the Divine mission of Christ. That he was the Messiah. That he died for their sins. That he rose again. That he ascended into heaven. That he sent down the gift of the Holy Spirit. That he ever appeared in the presence of God for them. That it was he who gives repentance and remission of sins. And, He by whom the world is to be judged. These were simple articles, of the truth of…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14And believers - This is the name by which Christians were designated, because one of the main things that distinguished them was that they “believed” that Jesus was the Christ. It is also an incidental proof that none should join themselves to the church who are not “believers”; that is, who do not profess to be Christians in heart and in life. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-16Verses 12-16 The separation of hypocrites by distinguishing judgments, should make the sincere cleave closer to each other and to the gospel ministry. Whatever tends to the purity and reputation of the church, promotes its enlargement; but that power alone which wrought such miracles by the apostles, can rescue sinners from the power of sin and Satan, and add believers to His worshippers. Christ will work by all his faithful servants; and every one who…Read the comment
