Context of Acts 5:14
12Many signs and wonders were being done among the people through the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13No one else dared to join them, but the people spoke well of them. Believers were added to the Lord in increasing numbers — multitudes of both men and women. 15As a result, they would carry the sick out into the streets and lay them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them. 16In addition, a multitude came together from the towns surrounding Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14And believers were the more added to the Lord - Believers: Those who credited the Divine mission of Christ. That he was the Messiah. That he died for their sins. That he rose again. That he ascended into heaven. That he sent down the gift of the Holy Spirit. That he ever appeared in the presence of God for them. That it was he who gives repentance and remission of sins. And, He by whom the world is to be judged. These were simple articles, of the truth of…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14And believers - This is the name by which Christians were designated, because one of the main things that distinguished them was that they “believed” that Jesus was the Christ. It is also an incidental proof that none should join themselves to the church who are not “believers”; that is, who do not profess to be Christians in heart and in life. Whatever tends to the purity and reputation of the church, promotes its enlargement; but that power alone which wrought such miracles by the apostles, can rescue sinners from the power of sin and Satan, and add believers to His worshippers. Christ will work by all his faithful servants; and every one who…Read the comment
