Context of Acts 5:14
12Meanwhile, through the hands of the emissaries many signs and wonders were happening among the people. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. 13But no one else dared to join them, though the people continued to think highly of them. Yet more than ever those trusting in the Lord were added—large numbers of men and women. 15They even carried the sick into the streets and laid them on stretchers and cots, so that when Peter passed by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. 16Crowds were also gathering from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing those who were sick or tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all being healed.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14And believers were the more added to the Lord - Believers: Those who credited the Divine mission of Christ. That he was the Messiah. That he died for their sins. That he rose again. That he ascended into heaven. That he sent down the gift of the Holy Spirit. That he ever appeared in the presence of God for them. That it was he who gives repentance and remission of sins. And, He by whom the world is to be judged. These were simple articles, of the truth of…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14And believers - This is the name by which Christians were designated, because one of the main things that distinguished them was that they “believed” that Jesus was the Christ. It is also an incidental proof that none should join themselves to the church who are not “believers”; that is, who do not profess to be Christians in heart and in life. Christ will work by all his faithful servants; and every one who…Read the comment
