Context of Acts 1:8
6So when they had gathered together, they began to ask him, “Lord, is this the time when you are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7He told them, “You are not permitted to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth.” 9After he had said this, while they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10As they were still staring into the sky while he was going, suddenly two men in white clothing stood near them

Commentaries on Acts 1:8
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8But ye shall receive power - . Translating different terms of the original by the same English word is a source of misapprehension and error. We must not understand which we translate power in this verse, as we do , translated by the same word in the preceding verse. In the one, God's infinite authority over all times and seasons, and his uncompellable liberty of acting or not acting in any given case, are particularly pointed out: in the other, the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8But ye shall receive power - Literally, as it is translated in the margin, “Ye shall receive the power of the Holy Spirit coming upon you.” This was said to them to console them. Though they could not know the times which God reserved in his own appointment, yet they should receive the promised Guide and Comforter. The word “power” here refers to the help or aid which the Holy Spirit would grant; the power of speaking with new tongues; of preaching the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-11Verses 6-11 They were earnest in asking about that which their Master never had directed or encouraged them to seek. Our Lord knew that his ascension and the teaching of the Holy Spirit would soon end these expectations, and therefore only gave them a rebuke; but it is a caution to his church in all ages, to take heed of a desire of forbidden knowledge. He had given his disciples instructions for the discharge of their duty, both before his death and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8This key verse shows how the good news about Jesus extended from place to place: It began in Jerusalem and Judea (1:6–8:1). It then came to Samaria (8:4–25). Next, it went to Antioch in Syria (11:19–30). Later, it extended across the Mediterranean Sea to Rome (13:1–28:31). Christ gave a similar mission to Saul of Tarsus (9:15). At first, Saul was well-known for persecuting Jewish Christians. After his encounter with Christ, he became the main person…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-86-8. wilt thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?--Doubtless their carnal views of Messiah's kingdom had by this time been modified, though how far it is impossible to say. But, as they plainly looked for some restoration of the kingdom to Israel, so they are neither rebuked nor contradicted on this point.Read the comment
