As soon as I was on my feet, I had a decided testimony for the people. Strength was given me, and I spoke for one hour from Acts 1:1-14. “When they therefore were come together, they asked of Him, saying, Lord wilt Thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? And He said unto them, It is not for you to know the times and the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. ... Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a Sabbath day’s journey. And when they were come in, they went into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James and John and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brethren.” [Acts 1:1-9, 12-14.]Acts 1:1-26

Evening after the Sabbath. It is milder today. There were fewer than 100 present but they are indeed a very intelligent people who have embraced the truth. I spoke from Acts 1, on the commission given by Christ to His disciples. I had freedom in speaking. As we were so scattered, meeting held from eleven o’clock. We were in Sabbath school one hour. I spoke at twelve.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Conversion among the people is what we must see, before they are made ready to stand in the great day of God. Truth is always aggressive, it is not a passive, dead element; it is a working power that operates upon the hearts of those who believe. The Lord never honors cold Pharisaism and unbelief. Let all our brethren read the first few chapters of Acts, and see how the Lord has worked and how He will work where faith is cherished in the hearts of His people. Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but let every one serve God with pure, clean, unselfish hearts, having an eye single to the glory of God. We need power from above, a more than mortal power, to accompany the proclamation of the last message of mercy to our world. With this power victories will be achieved that will make manifest that divine power accompanies the words of the human agents whom God is using to defeat the lying wonders of this degenerate age.9LtMs, Lt 27, 1894, par. 39
The promise is, “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” [Acts 1:8.] God will accept no sleepy, tame message at this time. In old time “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost,” and we may expect such teaching in our day. [2 Peter 1:21.] I know that the Lord has wrought by His own power in Battle Creek. Let no one attempt to deny this; for in so doing they will sin against the Holy Ghost. Because there may be need to warn and caution every one to walk carefully and prayerfully, in order that the deceptive influence of the enemy shall not lead men away from the Bible, let no one suppose that God will not manifest His power among His believing people; for He will work and none can hinder Him. His name will be praise in the earth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

I have opportunity this morning to meet the teachers and students in the school and speak to them. It is now half past five. I have just called Willie. We walk across a wooded paddock to the school building—the walk taking about fifteen minutes. Then we shall have a one hour’s meeting. Yesterday, Sabbath, we had the large dining hall full of people; some outsiders were present, the school teacher and the wife of the surveyor of the wooded tract, the postmaster, and several other who seem favorably inclined. I spoke from the first four verses of John fourteen, and from (Acts 1), showing the ascension of our Lord to heaven. We had a good interest. We then entered into the business of organizing a church of twenty-five members. Quite a number of the present students of the Agricultural School will become members of the church in Cooranbong but are not yet fully prepared, some not having received their letters from their churches; others know not whether they will be residents of Cooranbong or of some other place.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

There was a question in my mind as to whether I [would] attend meeting, but I felt that I could not be clear to remain at home. I would be greatly pleased could you unite with us in Australia in our work. You would understand [the work] better that anyone we could get to help me in getting out my testimonies which the people need so much. If I had more help, I would now begin to write, and finish up the New Testament history and then take up the Old Testament history. Which do you think would be the best—the revision of the Life of Paul and the Apostles from Acts through to Revelation, or the Old Testament from Solomon down to Malachi? I would be so pleased if I could have your help. The meetings commenced on Thursday evening. On Sabbath morning there was a small attendance, but a larger number came out in the afternoon, when I spoke from (John 14), “Let not your heart be troubled.” [Verse 1.] This passage I linked with (Acts 1), the commission of Christ to His disciples and the promise of the Holy Spirit, and the message of the angels to the waiting disciples. I spoke only a short time, but I tried to impress upon those assembled the necessity of their being educated to believe the Word of God, and to show their faith by their works. Practical godliness was the burden of my talk.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

Luke, the writer of the book of Acts, and Theophilus, to whom it is addressed, had been pleasantly associated. From Luke, Theophilus had received much instruction and great light. Luke had been Theophilus’ teacher, and he still felt a responsibility to direct and instruct him and to sustain and protect him in his work.18LtMs, Ms 40, 1903, par. 3
“The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which He was taken up, after that He through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom He had chosen: to whom also He showed Himself alive after His passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: and being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith He, ye have heard of Me. In the Gospels are to be found the history and instruction of Christ, “all that Jesus began both to do and to teach.” [Acts 1:1.] The doctrines He taught were confirmed by the miraculous works which He performed, proving Him to be commissioned of God. Nicodemus “came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, Rabbi, we know that Thou art a Teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that Thou doest, except God be with him.” [John 3:2.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Oh, how much we lose by failing to do as Christ has instructed us to do! In the record of the Acts of the Apostles, we see the disciples of Jesus manifesting a Christlike activity in medical missionary work. All their efforts were put forth in the strength of the divine united with the human. Like a stream, which may be traced back to its source, their medical missionary work was so genuine that it could easily be traced back to the Great Medical Missionary. What a grand thing that was for the disciples before they were left and Jesus ascended—that He stayed with them, revealing Himself unto them for forty days. How gracious the Lord is with us who are oft so unbelieving! He wants us to have that confidence that we will receive the evidences He has left for us.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 3
Verses 5-8. There is such a thing as being so inquisitive that we shall not feel the importance of relying upon a living faith, upon the promises of the Scriptures. So there are things that we may greatly desire to know that are not given to us to know. We must walk by faith; we must understand and know that it is our privilege to walk by faith and to take God at His word.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 4
“Ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria.” Shall we stop there? No. “Unto the uttermost part of the earth.” [Verse 8.] There is no easy chair for you to sit down in here. Christ has given His own life an infinite sacrifice to save the people that were in their sins, that they should not perish, but have everlasting life. We have no right to let our influence be on the side of contention, and to be contending one with another. No, indeed. Time is passing; time is precious. In a little time this world will be largely in the possession of satanic agencies. It is largely controlled by them now, but we do not realize it. Today the picture is presented, showing some wonderful thing to imperil lives, to show something that no one else has shown. What foolishness!25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 5
In the world we see the spirit of opposition to one another, striving for the mastery, striving to be exalted above somebody else. What is our business? To look unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. It is not to take part in this hubbub and all this confusion that is taking place in our world today. Every individual soul is to form a solid character according to the Word of God, that they may have an assurance that they will have an entrance, according to His Word, into the kingdom of God. You want to know for you individual selves whether you have that faith that works by love and purifies the soul. What we want is a living religion. You want it every day of your lives, for you know not when you go out of your house whether you will come in again alive.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 6
Satan is taking possession of the minds of his party, and he is determined to have the control. And we put off and put off what Christ has told us to do. What is it? To go into the world and to preach to all classes. This is our work, and He gave us an example. And this seeking to get an easy place where you will be exalted or extolled—have nothing to do with it at all. That is what the devil puts into the mind, but you must not do that thing. What we want is to walk in all humility before God. What we want is to be companions with Christ in His sufferings.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 7
Christ said, “I am the true vine, my Father is the husbandman; every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh away; and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” [John 15:1, 2.] How is that possible? How is it possible that He purgeth it? It is just as possible as it was for Christ to endure what He endured in coming into the world, to make it possible for you to endure suffering. How? By perfecting a Christian character—not to detract from it, but to perfect it, because you show the Christlikeness. If they abuse you, you will not retaliate. God wants every soul of us to come into right relation to Him. Without being exalted and bolstered up, He wants us to know Him, and to show by a living example what we will do to be partakers with Christ in His sufferings. Our work is before us.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 8
I do not pay the least attention to all these little things that are done to try to hedge up my way. I know that I have a connection with the God of heaven, and I am so thankful for it that I have been willing to go from place to place when I am in my eighty-third year. For five months I labored and went from place to place, traveling and laboring every day, that I might go to the places where they begged me to come. It was hard for me to keep changing and traveling, and I am still suffering from the labors put forth at Lodi and Mountain View. Yet I have ventured to speak twice to a congregation as the college, but have not dared to speak long at a time.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 9
I want to tell you that I thank the Lord I can say a few words. And I want to tell every one of you that unless you come into closer connection with God, your faith will be so weak that when the fiercer trials come you cannot endure them. But you say, I will be a partaker with Christ in His sufferings.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 10
I was sitting in my chair just before starting on a long journey, and I lost myself, and I will tell you what was presented to me. “I am the true vine. ...” [Verse 1.] Whatever your disposition, whatever your temperament, unless you are molded and fashioned after Christ’s likeness you will never meet Him in peace. “I am the vine,” was presented in such clearness. Those that promise to bear fruit, to work to the glory of God, He pruneth, that they may bring forth more fruit. Now do not consider your trials are an abuse to you. They are to bring you into living connection with God. They are to teach you to resist the devil, and to cling to Jesus Christ. You want to get rid of your old hereditary tendencies and passionate disposition, and learn of Jesus to be meek and lowly. Why? Because there is a heaven to win and a hell to shun. You cannot afford to miss obtaining victories. May God put His Holy Spirit upon you and me, that we may fight the battles of the Lord and come off victorious.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 11
Now it is stated here, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons.” [Acts 1:7.] What you want to know is that you are a branch of the true vine. Now, do not get discouraged at the pruning. God help us that we may bind up with Jesus Christ, and be partakers of His sufferings. What did He suffer for? He had not done a thing but try to win souls to Himself, to His Father through Himself.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 12
Satan is constantly working, and now is the time that Satan is seeking to take possession of the minds of the whole world, and he flatters himself greatly on account of what has taken place here since the destruction of San Francisco. Since then the wickedness has increased in a tremendous manner. They are working along that line, and it is our business to work just as zealously on the other line, to work for Jesus Christ and to bring in all the examples in faith and truth and holiness by our own words and our own works, by our looking unto Jesus, who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. Every one of us has battles to fight.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 13
The gospel is to be preached “unto the uttermost part of the earth.” [Verse 8.] Christ died for the world, and we do not realize it. We do not seem to understand that we are to be co-laborers with Christ. You are to save that dollar that you would spend needlessly for dress or some other thing. What are you to do with it? You are to place it where it will be the means of bringing some light to some soul that needs the truth, but who cannot get it unless it is sent to him by our doing self-denying work and letting the light come in. We have no right to hoard means. “Does not Sister White?” you ask. No, indeed, she does not. I am getting my books out, and hiring the money to send them out all the time. That is what I am doing. I am not hoarding up money. We want to understand that there is a world to be saved.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 14
When I stand before the people, and especially when I see schools such as I saw at Lodi, I have a tremendous intensity of feeling that these may be carried on in right lines, that they may enjoy the most blessed experience that the Lord is willing to give them day by day.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 15
“I am the true vine ... beareth not fruit.” [John 15:1, 2.] They do not see that there is a world to be saved. The pruning hurts, but if you will endure it, you will understand that it is to perfect a Christian character. It is to work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. We have a heaven to win, and may God help us that we shall not miss the opportunity when we have it. In the world there is every possible invention to keep up an excitement and to divert the mind and to call people to one pleasure after another. That is just preparing for the coming of the Lord. He will come with power. He will come to put these things to an end. But it will be too late for you to work on the side of Christ then. You will have finished your period that God has given you to bear fruit. We want to bear fruit to His glory now. Every one of us wants to stand in right relation to God.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 16
You and I are to put an estimate on the souls that Christ came into our world to save. He went on foot from place to place with the Word in His hand, to express that Word, to explain that Word to the people as He traveled, until five thousand were gathered about Him. There were those who hated Him just as badly as they will hate you if you try to win souls to Christ. And if you will give up your trying to be first, God will place the first just where He wants them. He will not ask you about it. He knows you do not know. He knows a good many of you would place them wrongly.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 17
He has left the old hands, gray-headed men, in the work, that they might give the benefit of their experience from the first; and I have given to them what God has given to me. They are to stand as God has appointed them, to understand the incoming of the enemy and what he would do. Be very thankful for the gray-headed men that are in your midst, and try to hold up their hands and help them. God has appointed them, and He wants every one of you to stand in a position where you will be a blessing to the gray-headed men who have had an experience from the very beginning of the work. They are acquainted with the opposition and all the varied experiences that have come to us, from their boyhood when they stood together with those a little older, and the light of truth has come that they had a message to carry. The Lord enabled them to try to place themselves in that position where they could bear the message.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 18
Well, He wants every one of us to come into a position where He can lend us His grace and His power to carry forward His work. He says we are to work in the uttermost part of the earth. We are trying to carry forward the work just as hard as we can, to get the knowledge of the truth to various places.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 19
[Acts 1] Verses 9-15. Mary, the mother of Jesus, saw the Saviour, not in His glory but in His sufferings. Now, that chapter is enough to give you an understanding of just what should be.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 20
We do not want to bring too many things before you, but we want to tell you it is best for everyone to cultivate the knowledge that Christ has given us in regard to His second appearing. Search the Scriptures. As I read the papers, I know that conditions are just as they have been presented to me time and time again that they would be in San Francisco and Oakland. Wickedness will increase, but we want to get ready, and we want to do the very work that God has appointed us to do.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 21
We want to walk in all humility of mind so that Jesus can work with us, not to have a strong will of our own to go and come just as we please, but to be in perfect harmony in the work, to help one another, to strengthen one another, to pray with one another. And although there may be those who will carry their reports about this and that and the other, are you to pay attention to it? Are you to stop your work to listen to the reports that are made concerning you and your work? You would not be doing anything for the Lord then.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 22
Get your eye fastened upon the Lamb of Calvary who for our sakes gave His own life that we might be saved. He is a true Branch, and as I sat in my chair and this was presented to me, I thought I never saw anything so beautiful in my life. I lost all consciousness of everything around me. Strive to be a true branch of the living vine. Let men and women report what they will; they will have that to answer for, but we will not suffer on that account, religiously, unless we give ourselves up, taking heed to it. Think of Christ’s sufferings. Could we suffer more? He hung on Calvary’s cross, our Redeemer, the nails driven through His hands and feet, the Pharisees mocking and deriding Him. And you will have just such experiences, but what then? We have a heaven to win. We have a Christ to look to. We have One that will uphold and sustain us at every step. Well, then, let us not give up to any discouragements.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 23
Acts 2:1-11. All these different nationalities were there, that they might hear in their own tongue; and that would carry conviction to them; that was to go broadcast everywhere. Verses 12, 13. We will go no further on this, because I have talked as long as my strength will permit me to go; but I want to tell you, my brethren and sisters, this gospel is to go to all parts of the world. When I see our cities unworked, I cannot sleep. I have been night after night, night after night, sleeping perhaps three hours, and some nights not sleeping at all, but talking with the Lord about it and asking that He would give His people an awakening of their minds, that they may not keep them buried up in little items here in this life, letting those that are within our reach go without personal labor, and sending our missionaries away to do work. I have given the message over and over and over, and yet we see so little arousing to take hold of the work. Why, I have lain night after night, wringing my hands in distress, saying, Will they never awake? Will they never awake? Can we say or do anything to arouse them?25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 25
They sometimes say to me, “Do you know such a one said this and that?” “Yes, I know, but that does not trouble me. I know all about that. If you have something new, I will listen to it.” “Well, do not you care anything about these reports?” “No; only for themselves.” Let us every one of us close our lips to tattle. There is a world to be saved. If you want to help in the saving of the world, become converted and go right out from place to place, and you will become so interested in the work that all your tattle and all these things will be forgotten. You cannot think of them. You will have something higher to think of.25LtMs, Ms 73, 1910, par. 26
Let us lay hold of the work in earnest. Let us go where they have not heard the truth, where they will be glad to have the truth presented. The cities are unworked. I have called attention to this again and again. I have told them that I would take my printed books and let them have them to dispose of in the cities. Go right into the houses and take them the light that God has given you through these books, and then leave the book with them. If they will buy the book, take the money. What we want is to see true conversions, and that will crowd out the tattle of the wicked-minded better than anything else can. Let the Lord work, and we will work wherever we are, and we will see the salvation of God. There is much more I could say, but I think I have said enough.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

Saturday meetings commenced in the forenoon. W. C. White gave a very solemn discourse in regard to the signs of the times. Mrs. White, his mother, spoke in the afternoon from John 21:1-13. A very solemn impression was made upon the people, both forenoon and afternoon. After the discourse there was one hour devoted to social meeting. Many good testimonies were borne. I spoke in the Adventist church to a full house from the first and second chapters of Acts in reference to the Holy Spirit promised by our Saviour just before His ascension to heaven. Acts 1:8-12. In the second chapter we have the fulfillment of the promise. What a firm, bold acknowledgment of Christ came from the lips of Peter. Verses 22-40. What a testimony borne to those who had rejected Jesus and cried for Barabbas to be released, who was a murderer and thief and whose countenance was marked with his debased character. Christ, the world’s Redeemer, was standing by his side with the impress of the divine shining through humanity. Pilate asks, “Which shall I release unto you?” The hoarse voices, impelled by satanic frenzy, cried out as wild beasts bellowing in a rage, “Barabbas, Barabbas. Release unto us Barabbas.” “But what shall I do with Jesus, your king?” “Crucify him, crucify him. Away with Christ to the crucifixion.” [Matthew 27:21, 22; Luke 23:18, 21; John 19:14, 15.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

I am thankful that I can remain at home for a time, where I can be close to my helpers. Since you left, I have been very fully employed in the preparation of matter for the Life of Paul. We are trying to bring out scriptural evidences of truth, and these, we believe, will be appreciated by our people. I have been anxious to bring into this book much matter that will be of special help to our workers who may be called upon to pass through experiences similar to those that came to the early Christian church. There is, in the history of the Acts of the Apostles, much that, if appropriated in the daily life, will inspire our brethren and sisters with a desire to seek for a higher spiritual life and for greater power, and for wisdom to co-operate with heavenly intelligences in the salvation of souls.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

In the evening the dedication of the church took place in Ormondville. The text was in Acts, first chapter—the commission given by Christ to His disciples. [Verse 8.] I stated plainly, distinctly, that we were Seventh-day Adventists, and our reasons why we kept the fourth commandment just as it is given us by the Lord of heaven, and I read the fourth commandment, which is an explanation of our faith. We keep the seventh-day Sabbath, an institution given after the world was made in six days.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

I spoke one hour to the little few. Quite a number of strangers came in. My text was (John 14), first four verses. “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and take you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” This, I told them, was the lesson and promise of the personal, second appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. It had become a habit with those not of our faith, professed Christians, to think they were stigmatizing Seventh-day Adventists by showing their antipathy. “Oh, they are Adventists!” Jesus Christ’s discourse in (John 14) shows Himself an Adventist. He proclaimed His second coming to take His disciples, all who believe on His name, to the mansions He was going to prepare for them. In Acts first chapter, we read that when Jesus ascended to heaven, escorted by the angelic host, two angels proclaimed to the disciples, “Why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye see him go into heaven.” [Verse 11.] These disciples were Adventists!Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

Sabbath, May 20, I spoke to the few assembled in the Rechabite Hall from 1 Peter 1. The Lord gave me much freedom in speaking, and souls were comforted and encouraged. I spoke in the same place in the evening of Sunday, May 21, from John 14:1-3. The audience was small. I dwelt especially upon the promise, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” [Verse 3.] I brought out the ascension of Christ in (Acts 1), to prove a large link in the chain, connecting it with John 14. “And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel.” And while the disciples were looking upward to heaven to catch the last glimpse of their ascending Lord, they heard these words, “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” [Acts 1:10, 11.] A personal Saviour ascended.8LtMs, Ms 39, 1893, par. 11
Christ the Son of God proclaimed His coming. The angels, who addressed the disciples who were intently gazing upward to catch the last glimpse of their ascending Lord, proclaimed His second coming. “This same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” [Acts 1:11.] Why, then, should Seventh-day Adventists be stigmatized as fanatics? In the teachings of Christ He was ceaselessly referring to the Scriptures. Whenever a question was put to Him His answer was, “Have ye not read?” “What saith the Scriptures?” “How readest thou?” [Luke 10:26.] “Search the Scriptures.” [John 5:39.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

We have great reason to praise God that we have the inspired record that is given us in the book of Acts, a narrative of the works of the apostles. We have the sure word of inspiration respecting the foundation of the Christian church. The Acts of the Apostles is full of instruction and light and knowledge. As Christ’s disciples living down in the last days, in the very close of earth’s history, we have the same work to do to prepare for Christ’s second coming as they had in developing the Christian church.10LtMs, Ms 5, 1895, par. 4
They could not credit the fact that Peter would deny Him, that Judas would betray Him, that He would be rejected, scourged, and crucified; but everything that He had told them had been fulfilled, and they looked upon their risen Saviour with intense love and gratitude. “And being assembled together with them, he commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.” [Verse 4.] He had said to them before His death, “I will pray the father and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” [John 14:16, 17.]10LtMs, Ms 5, 1895, par. 9
Before He ascended on high He said to His disciples, “Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem and all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.” [Acts 1:8.] God’s message was not confined to any certain locality of the earth, nor was it to be given by a certain class of workers. As the Spirit of the Lord should move upon human agents, they were to respond, “Here am I, send me.” [Isaiah 6:8.] The message was to be preached in all the world for a witness, and then the end should come.Acts 1:2-14

The disciples were anxious to know the exact time for the revelation of the kingdom of God; but Jesus tells them that they may not know the times and the seasons; for the Father has not revealed them. To understand when the kingdom of God should be restored, was not the thing of most importance for them to know. They were to be found following the Master, praying, waiting, watching, and working. They were to be representatives to the world of the character of Christ. That which was essential for a successful Christian experience in the days of the disciples, is essential in our day. “And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.” And after the Holy Ghost was come upon them, what were they to do? “And ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:7, 8).Acts 1:3-11

The day of Pentecost came. Great additions were made to the church. In one day five thousand were converted. The disciples began to think that they had a great work to do in Jerusalem, in shielding the members of this church from the snares <and opposition> of the enemy. They did not realize that strength to resist temptation is best gained by active service. They did not educate the new church members to become workers together with God in carrying the gospel message to those who had not received the glad tidings of salvation through Christ. Instead, they were in danger of remaining with the church that they had raised up, and of being satisfied with what had been accomplished. The Lord permitted persecution to come upon His church, to scatter His representatives abroad, where they could work for others. Steven and several other Christians died martyrs to their faith; the church members were scattered; and the gospel was proclaimed with power “in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” [Verse 8.]The Review and Herald

They asked, “Wilt thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” The Lord rebuked their curiosity, and said, “It is not for you to know the times, and the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.” [Acts 1:6, 7.] There was one thing that they might understand, and that was that they were to receive power after that the Holy Ghost should come upon them, and that they were to be witnesses of Christ.Acts 1:4-11

Just before leaving His disciples, Christ once more plainly stated the nature of His kingdom. He recalled to their remembrance things He had previously told them regarding it. He declared that it was not His purpose to establish in this world a temporal kingdom. He was not appointed to reign as an earthly monarch on David’s throne. When the disciples asked Him, “Lord, wilt Thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” He answered, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power.” (Acts 1:6, 7.) Christ’s visible presence was about to be withdrawn from the disciples, but a new endowment of power was to be theirs. The Holy Spirit was to be given them in its fullness, sealing them for their work. “Behold,” the Saviour said, “I send the promise of My Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49.) . . . “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8.)Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

The day of Pentecost came. Great additions were made to the church. In one day five thousand were converted. The disciples began to think that they had a work to do in Jerusalem in shielding the members of the church from the snares of the enemy. They did not realize that strength to resist temptation is best gained by active service. They did not educate the new church members to become workers together with God in carrying the gospel to those who had not heard it. Instead, they were in danger of being satisfied with what had been accomplished. To scatter His representatives abroad, where they could work for others, the Lord permitted persecution to come upon His church. Stephen and several others died for their faith; then the members of the church were scattered; and the gospel was proclaimed with power “in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” [Verse 8.]Acts 1:5-11

When Jesus opened the understanding of the disciples to the meaning of the prophecies concerning Himself, He assured them that all power was given Him in heaven and on earth, and bade them go preach the gospel to every creature. The disciples, with a sudden revival of their old hope that Jesus would take His place upon the throne of David at Jerusalem, inquired, “Wilt Thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” Acts 1:6. The Saviour threw an uncertainty over their minds in regard to the subject by replying that it was not for them “to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power.” Acts 1:7.Acts 1:6-8

Christ said: “No man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him” (Matthew 11:27). O how dimly the exalted work of the Son of God is comprehended! He held the salvation of the world in His hands. The commission given to the apostles is also given to His followers in this age. “Repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:47). Our Saviour has “all power in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18), and this power is promised unto us. “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8).Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8

Many can tell what the great and good men of generations past have done, and dared, and suffered, and enjoyed. The Saviour has said: “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me” (Acts 1:8). With the reception of this gift, all other gifts would be ours; for we are to have this gift according to the plentitude of the riches of the grace of Christ, and He is ready to supply every soul according to the capacity to receive. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. There are souls, many, very many, who have lived in our very midst, who have gone down to the grave unwarned, because the living human agent did not discern his part of the work, to labor together with God. The piety of His believing people is to be diffusive. Those who believe in Jesus Christ are to be educated and trained for duty as faithful soldiers of the cross of Christ. We are to regard every man with whom we come in contact as our neighbor, to whom we are to communicate the grace and precious light of truth. Selfishness may subscribe a small circle of action, but the Lord Jesus said, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” [Acts 1:8.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

There is home missionary work that is to be done, and we hear the plea, So long as there is so much sin and such need of labor in our own country, why manifest such zeal for foreign countries? I answer, Our field is the world. Wickedness abounds to an alarming extent everywhere. The Saviour directed His disciples to begin their work in Jerusalem, and then pass on through Judea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Only a small proportion of the people accepted the doctrine; but the messengers bore the message rapidly from place to place, passing from country to country, lifting the standard of the gospel in all the near and far-off places of the earth. There is home missionary work to be done and we hear the plea, So long as there is so much wickedness and such need of labor in our own country why manifest such zeal for foreign countries? I answer, Our field is the world. Wickedness abounds to an alarming extent everywhere. The Saviour directed His disciples to begin their work in Jerusalem, and then pass on through Judea and Samaria and unto the uttermost parts of the earth. Only a small proportion of the people accepted the gospel. But the messengers bore the message rapidly from place to place, passing from country to country, lifting the standard of the gospel in all the near and far-off places of the earth. For your souls’ sake I ask you to take the Word of God and search its pages as never before in order that you may know what it means to be Christlike. You need not be discouraged, for from the lips of Christ who died to save you, you have this promise, “Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses for me in Judea and in Jerusalem and in all Samaria and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.” [Acts 1:8.] Mark it: You are to receive power from on high. Then put away all harshness, all denunciation of your brethren, all criticism, and be broken at the feet of your Lord. Let earnestness come into your hearts, and have fervent charity among yourselves. If you bite and devour one another, you will be consumed one of another. Harshness and unkindness is a curse in any home, and it is like a desolating hail in the church. It shuts Jesus out of the heart and out of the church.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

How soon circumstances would test his allegiance to his Master! He denied Jesus in the very hour he should [have] watched with Him in fervent prayer. When in the judgment hall he was accused of being one of this Man’s disciples, he denied; and the third time he was accused, he emphasized his denial with cursing and swearing. Said Christ, “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me.” [Acts 1:8.] The look Jesus gave Peter of grief and sadness, was not a hopeless look, and it broke the heart of Peter who denied his Lord.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

Jesus is standing but a step, as it were, from the completion of His great sacrifice for the world. “Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creatures.” [Mark 16:15.] He repeats His injunction over and over again in different forms, that they might after His death and resurrection [and ascension] to heaven, take in the significance of His words. After His resurrection, “then opened he their understanding that they might understand the Scriptures, and said unto them, Thus it is written and thus it behoved Christ to suffer and to rise again the third day,” and that remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. It is only as God sees His professed people eager to be laborers together with Him that He can impart to them light and grace, for then they will make every interest secondary to the interest of His work and cause. With such workers the heavenly intelligences will co-operate. Jesus says, “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me.” [Acts 1:8.] It is the union of the Holy Spirit and the testimony of the living witness that is to warn the world. The work is extending in America; but shall this part of the world, of English speaking people, be left out of the planning and reaching of our conference? Shall not the Christian reformation go forward here? I have set before our people our necessities. But the treasury is drained to add continually to the conveniences and building up of the work in America where our people have a powerful influence. What can we do unless we can make a beginning in these cities? Are the means raised by God’s people to be absorbed wholly in America? I answer, No. Means ought to have been in these fields and these cities worked years ago; but watchmen have been asleep as to what was required in these cities. Are we to make a retreat? Are we to give up now? When we read of the outpouring of the Spirit in America, we consider the words of Christ just before His ascension, “After that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” [Acts 1:8.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

God would have imbued the worker with His Holy Spirit as he sought to diffuse the light that God had given to him. He who works with an eye single to the glory of God, will have increased light as he imparts light. He will see and realize the value of souls, and contact with an unconverted soul will lead him to kindle his taper at the divine altar and bear its light to his fellow men. God will use the most humble men, even if they have not been ordained. Let all open the heart to the voice and the knock of Jesus and let Him in. When a man is filled with the Holy Spirit, the more severely he is tested and tried, the more clearly he proves that he is a true representative of Christ in word, in spirit, in action. Christ declares, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father” (John 14:12). What is the promise to every true believer? “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you” (Acts 1:8). Might we not better, my brethren and sisters, take ourselves to task for our unlikeness to Christ? He says, “Ye are my witnesses” (Isaiah 43:10). What kind of witnesses are we for truth and righteousness? Are we striving with all our God-given powers to reach the measure of the stature of men and women in Christ? Are we seeking for His fullness, ever reaching higher and higher, trying to attain to the perfection of His character?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

It is not merely the white people in the Southern field that are to receive the message of truth. Methods and plans must be devised to reach the colored people. This kind of work calls for laborers, and the duty rests upon our responsible men to set men at work in that field, and to sustain the work with a portion of the means supplied through tithes and offerings from the believers in all parts of our world. God’s field is the world. Jesus said to his disciples, “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” [Acts 1:8.] “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” [Luke 24:47.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

The Lord would have His people in the world but not of the world. They should seek to bring the truth before the men in high places, and give them a fair chance to receive and weigh evidence. There are many who are unenlightened and uninformed, and as individuals we have a serious, solemn, wise work to do. We are to have travail of soul for those who are in high places, and go to them with the gracious invitation to come to the marriage feast. Very much more might have been done than has been done for those in high places. The last message that Christ gave to His disciples before He was parted from them and taken up into heaven, was a message to carry the gospel to all the world, and was accompanied by the promise of the Holy Spirit. The Lord said, “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” [Acts 1:8.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

The Christian church began its existence by praying for the descent of the Holy Spirit. It was in its infancy, without the personal presence of Christ. He had ascended to heaven. Just before His ascension He had commissioned them to preach the gospel to all the world. “Ye shall receive power,” He said, “after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth. And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.” [Acts 1:8, 9.]Acts 1:8-11

Christ’s visible presence was about to be withdrawn, but a new endowment of power was to be theirs. The Holy Spirit was to be given them in its fullness. “I send the promise of My Father upon you,” the Saviour said, “but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8.TT 19.3
While the disciples were gazing upward to catch the last glimpse of their ascending Lord, He was received into the ranks of heavenly angels and escorted to the courts above. Once get the eye of the ignorant, superstitious idolaters upon the Son of God who gave His life a sacrifice to the world, there is not, cannot be any stumbling when the minds of the heathen are enlightened to see Jesus the Gift, the wonderful Gift to our world. Fear not, for we are laborers together with Christ to bind souls through the enlightenment of the Word to a living Saviour who is sending His heavenly messengers with the word, “Look unto Me and be ye saved all the ends of the earth.” [Verse 22.] The ends of the earth embrace all heathen lands as much as all intelligent nationalities. The forbidding peculiarities will change when Christ is brought to view, for we are all laborers together with Christ. “Look unto Me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.” Christians, look and live. And the last words of Christ, as He was drawn heavenward to meet the angel throng that was waiting for Him, were, “And, lo, I am with you alway, even until the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Two angels of the heavenly throng were standing beside the disciples and asked them, “Why stand ye gazing up into the heavens? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” [Acts 1:11.]22LtMs, Ms 157, 1907, par. 11
We need now the Holy Spirit of God. We had about twenty-eight Sunday night. I spoke upon the first three verses of John 14 and Acts 1:8-12, telling them we were Adventists and not at all did we blush to acknowledge this. The disciples rejoiced after the message given to them by the angels and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And when they heard any one speaking sneeringly—“Oh, they are only Adventists,” to tell them Mrs. White considered it an honor to be a Seventh-day Adventist.Acts 1:8-14

In order that His disciples might engage in this great work and fulfil their commission, Christ declared that they would have power as God’s peculiar people. “Ye shall have power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.” [Acts 1:8.]12LtMs, Ms 124, 1897, par. 11

Luke 24:49-53, Acts 1:9-11. Here is the promise that the very same Jesus that ascended up into heaven should so come in like manner as He went into heaven. And we read that they returned to Jerusalem with great joy. Now this joy was not because they were parted from their Redeemer and they were to no more have His company upon the earth, but the joy was that that Saviour that went up into heaven would come again <in like manner as He ascended,> and they should see Him. As He ascended, His hands were stretched out in blessing <upon> His disciples, as they stood gazing at Him <in the heavens to catch the last sight of their ascending Lord.> Floating down from the clouds come these words, “Lo I am with you even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]Acts 1:9-12
The Desire of Ages
Chapter 87—“To My Father, and Your Father”
DA 829.1
The time had come for Christ to ascend to His Father’s throne. As a divine conqueror He was about to return with the trophies of victory to the heavenly courts. Before His death He had declared to His Father, “I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do.” John 17:4. After His resurrection He tarried on earth for a season, that His disciples might become familiar with Him in His risen and glorified body. Now He was ready for the leave-taking. He had authenticated the fact that He was a living Saviour. His disciples need no longer associate Him with the tomb. They could think of Him as glorified before the heavenly universe.DA 829.2
As the place of His ascension, Jesus chose the spot so often hallowed by His presence while He dwelt among men. Not Mount Zion, the place of David’s city, not Mount Moriah, the temple site, was to be thus honored. There Christ had been mocked and rejected. There the waves of mercy, still returning in a stronger tide of love, had been beaten back by hearts as hard as rock. Thence Jesus, weary and heart-burdened, had gone forth to find rest in the Mount of Olives. The holy Shekinah, in departing from the first temple, had stood upon the eastern mountain, as if loath to forsake the chosen city; so Christ stood upon Olivet, with yearning heart overlooking Jerusalem. The groves and glens of the mountain had been consecrated by His prayers and tears. Its steeps had echoed the triumphant shouts of the multitude that proclaimed Him king. On its sloping descent He had found a home with Lazarus at Bethany. In the garden of Gethsemane at its foot He had prayed and agonized alone. From this mountain He was to ascend to heaven. Upon its summit His feet will rest when He shall come again. Not as a man of sorrows, but as a glorious and triumphant king He will stand upon Olivet, while Hebrew hallelujahs mingle with Gentile hosannas, and the voices of the redeemed as a mighty host shall swell the acclamation, Crown Him Lord of all!DA 830.1
Now with the eleven disciples Jesus made His way toward the mountain. As they passed through the gate of Jerusalem, many wondering eyes looked upon the little company, led by One whom a few weeks before the rulers had condemned and crucified. The disciples knew not that this was to be their last interview with their Master. Jesus spent the time in conversation with them, repeating His former instruction. As they approached Gethsemane, He paused, that they might call to mind the lessons He had given them on the night of His great agony. Again He looked upon the vine by which He had then represented the union of His church with Himself and His Father; again He repeated the truths He had then unfolded. All around Him were reminders of His unrequited love. Even the disciples who were so dear to His heart, had, in the hour of His humiliation, reproached and forsaken Him.DA 830.2
Christ had sojourned in the world for thirty-three years; He had endured its scorn, insult, and mockery; He had been rejected and crucified. Now, when about to ascend to His throne of glory,—as He reviews the ingratitude of the people He came to save,—will He not withdraw from them His sympathy and love? Will not His affections be centered upon that realm where He is appreciated, and where sinless angels wait to do His bidding? No; His promise to those loved ones whom He leaves on earth is, “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20.DA 830.3
Upon reaching the Mount of Olives, Jesus led the way across the summit, to the vicinity of Bethany. Here He paused, and the disciples gathered about Him. Beams of light seemed to radiate from His countenance as He looked lovingly upon them. He upbraided them not for their faults and failures; words of the deepest tenderness were the last that fell upon their ears from the lips of their Lord. With hands outstretched in blessing, and as if in assurance of His protecting care, He slowly ascended from among them, drawn heavenward by a power stronger than any earthly attraction. As He passed upward, the awe-stricken disciples looked with straining eyes for the last glimpse of their ascending Lord. A cloud of glory hid Him from their sight; and the words came back to them as the cloudy chariot of angels received Him, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” At the same time there floated down to them the sweetest and most joyous music from the angel choir.DA 831.1
While the disciples were still gazing upward, voices addressed them which sounded like richest music. They turned, and saw two angels in the form of men, who spoke to them, saying, “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven.”DA 832.1
These angels were of the company that had been waiting in a shining cloud to escort Jesus to His heavenly home. The most exalted of the angel throng, they were the two who had come to the tomb at Christ’s resurrection, and they had been with Him throughout His life on earth. With eager desire all heaven had waited for the end of His tarrying in a world marred by the curse of sin. The time had now come for the heavenly universe to receive their King. Did not the two angels long to join the throng that welcomed Jesus? But in sympathy and love for those whom He had left, they waited to give them comfort. “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” Hebrews 1:14.DA 832.2
Christ had ascended to heaven in the form of humanity. The disciples had beheld the cloud receive Him. The same Jesus who had walked and talked and prayed with them; who had broken bread with them; who had been with them in their boats on the lake; and who had that very day toiled with them up the ascent of Olivet,—the same Jesus had now gone to share His Father’s throne. And the angels had assured them that the very One whom they had seen go up into heaven, would come again even as He had ascended. He will come “with clouds; and every eye shall see Him.” “The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the Archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise.” “The Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory.” Revelation 1:7; 1 Thessalonians 4:16; Matthew 25:31. Thus will be fulfilled the Lord’s own promise to His disciples: “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:3. Well might the disciples rejoice in the hope of their Lord’s return.DA 832.3
When the disciples went back to Jerusalem, the people looked upon them with amazement. After the trial and crucifixion of Christ, it had been thought that they would appear downcast and ashamed. Their enemies expected to see upon their faces an expression of sorrow and defeat. Instead of this there was only gladness and triumph. Their faces were aglow with a happiness not born of earth. They did not mourn over disappointed hopes, but were full of praise and thanksgiving to God. With rejoicing they told the wonderful story of Christ’s resurrection and His ascension to heaven, and their testimony was received by many.DA 833.1
The disciples no longer had any distrust of the future. They knew that Jesus was in heaven, and that His sympathies were with them still. They knew that they had a friend at the throne of God, and they were eager to present their requests to the Father in the name of Jesus. In solemn awe they bowed in prayer, repeating the assurance, “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in My name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:23, 24. They extended the hand of faith higher and higher, with the mighty argument, “It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” Romans 8:34. And Pentecost brought them fullness of joy in the presence of the Comforter, even as Christ had promised.DA 833.2
All heaven was waiting to welcome the Saviour to the celestial courts. As He ascended, He led the way, and the multitude of captives set free at His resurrection followed. The heavenly host, with shouts and acclamations of praise and celestial song, attended the joyous train.DA 833.3
As they drew near to the city of God, the challenge is given by the escorting angels,—DA 833.4
“Lift up your heads, O ye gates;And be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors;
And the King of glory shall come in.”
DA 833.5
Joyfully the waiting sentinels respond,—DA 833.6
“Who is this King of glory?”DA 833.7
This they say, not because they know not who He is, but because they would hear the answer of exalted praise,—DA 833.8
“The Lord strong and mighty,The Lord mighty in battle!
Lift up your heads, O ye gates;
Even lift them up, ye everlasting doors;
And the King of glory shall come in.”
DA 833.9
Again is heard the challenge, “Who is this King of glory?” for the angels never weary of hearing His name exalted. The escorting angels make reply,—DA 833.10
“The Lord of hosts; He is the King of glory.” Psalm 24:7-10.
DA 833.11
Then the portals of the city of God are opened wide, and the angelic throng sweep through the gates amid a burst of rapturous music.DA 834.1
There is the throne, and around it the rainbow of promise. There are cherubim and seraphim. The commanders of the angel hosts, the sons of God, the representatives of the unfallen worlds, are assembled. The heavenly council before which Lucifer had accused God and His Son, the representatives of those sinless realms over which Satan had thought to establish his dominion,—all are there to welcome the Redeemer. They are eager to celebrate His triumph and to glorify their King.DA 834.2
But He waves them back. Not yet; He cannot now receive the coronet of glory and the royal robe. He enters into the presence of His Father. He points to His wounded head, the pierced side, the marred feet; He lifts His hands, bearing the print of nails. He points to the tokens of His triumph; He presents to God the wave sheaf, those raised with Him as representatives of that great multitude who shall come forth from the grave at His second coming. He approaches the Father, with whom there is joy over one sinner that repents; who rejoices over one with singing. Before the foundations of the earth were laid, the Father and the Son had united in a covenant to redeem man if he should be overcome by Satan. They had clasped Their hands in a solemn pledge that Christ should become the surety for the human race. This pledge Christ has fulfilled. When upon the cross He cried out, “It is finished,” He addressed the Father. The compact had been fully carried out. Now He declares: Father, it is finished. I have done Thy will, O My God. I have completed the work of redemption. If Thy justice is satisfied, “I will that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am.” John 19:30; 17:24.DA 834.3
The voice of God is heard proclaiming that justice is satisfied. Satan is vanquished. Christ’s toiling, struggling ones on earth are “accepted in the Beloved.” Ephesians 1:6. Before the heavenly angels and the representatives of unfallen worlds, they are declared justified. Where He is, there His church shall be. “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.” Psalm 85:10. The Father’s arms encircle His Son, and the word is given, “Let all the angels of God worship Him.” Hebrews 1:6.DA 834.4
With joy unutterable, rulers and principalities and powers acknowledge the supremacy of the Prince of life. The angel host prostrate themselves before Him, while the glad shout fills all the courts of heaven, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.” Revelation 5:12.DA 835.1
Songs of triumph mingle with the music from angel harps, till heaven seems to overflow with joy and praise. Love has conquered. The lost is found. Heaven rings with voices in lofty strains proclaiming, “Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever and ever.” Revelation 5:13.*****
DA 835.2
From that scene of heavenly joy, there comes back to us on earth the echo of Christ’s own wonderful words, “I ascend unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God, and your God.” John 20:17. The family of heaven and the family of earth are one. For us our Lord ascended, and for us He lives. “Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:25.EGW Writings — Ellen G.
