Zephaniah 2
Judgments on Judah’s Enemies
1Gather yourselves together, yes, 1gather, O nation 2without 3shame,2Before the decree 4takes effect-- The day passes 5like the chaff-- Before the 6burning anger of the Lord comes upon you, Before the 7day of the Lord’s anger comes upon you.38Seek the Lord, All you 9humble of the 10earth Who have carried out His 11ordinances; 12Seek righteousness, seek humility. Perhaps you will be 13hidden In the day of the Lord’s anger.
4For 14Gaza will be abandoned And Ashkelon a desolation; 15Ashdod will be driven out at noon And 16Ekron will be uprooted.5Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast, The nation of the 1718Cherethites! The word of the Lord is 19against you, O 20Canaan, land of the Philistines; And I will 21destroy you So that there will be 22no inhabitant.6So the seacoast will be 23pastures, With 24caves for shepherds and folds for flocks.7And the coast will be For the 25remnant of the house of Judah, They will 26pasture on it. In the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down at evening; For the Lord their God will 27care for them And 28restore their fortune.
8“I have heard the 2930taunting of Moab And the 31revilings of the sons of Ammon, With which they have 32taunted My people And 3334become arrogant against their territory.9Therefore, as I live,” declares the Lord of hosts, The God of Israel, “Surely 35Moab will be like 36Sodom And the sons of 37Ammon like 38Gomorrah-- A place possessed by nettles and salt pits, And a perpetual desolation. The remnant of My people will 39plunder them And the remainder of My nation will inherit them.” 10This they will have in return for their 40pride, because they have 4142taunted and 43become arrogant against the people of the Lord of hosts. 11The Lord will be 44terrifying to them, for He will 45starve 46all the gods of the earth; and all the 47coastlands of the nations will 48bow down to Him, everyone from his own place.
12“You also, O 49Ethiopians, will be slain by My sword.”13And He will 50stretch out His hand against the north And destroy 51Assyria, And He will make 52Nineveh a desolation, Parched like the wilderness.14Flocks will lie down in her midst, 53All beasts which range in herds; Both the 5455pelican and the hedgehog Will lodge in 56the tops of her pillars; 57Birds will sing in the window, Desolation will be on the threshold; For He has laid bare the cedar work.15This is the 58exultant city Which 59dwells securely, Who says in her heart, “60I am, and there is no one besides me.” How she has become a 61desolation, A resting place for beasts! 62Everyone who passes by her will hiss And wave his hand in contempt.
