Nineveh Repents

1Now the wordדְבַר־de.var-H1697of the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068cameוַיְהִ֧יvay.HiH1961to Jonahיוֹנָ֖הyo.NahH3124the secondשֵׁנִ֥יתshe.NitH8145timeH8145,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

2“Ariseק֛וּםkumH6965,goלֵ֥ךְlekhH1980toNinevehנִֽינְוֵ֖הnin.VehH5210the greatהַגְּדוֹלָ֑הha.ge.do.LahH1419cityהָעִ֣ירha.'IrH5892andproclaimוִּקְרָ֤אvik.Ra'H7121to it the proclamationהַקְּרִיאָ֔הha.ke.ri.'AhH7150whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I am going to tellדֹּבֵ֥רdo.VerH1696you.”

3So Jonahיוֹנָ֗הyo.NahH3124aroseוַיָּ֣קָםvai.Ya.komH6965and wentוַיֵּ֛לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to Ninevehנִֽינְוֶ֖הnin.VehH5210according to the wordכִּדְבַ֣רkid.VarH1697of the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068.Now Ninevehוְנִֽינְוֵ֗הve.ni.ne.VehH5210was anexceedinglyלֵֽאלֹהִ֔יםle.lo.HimH430greatגְּדוֹלָה֙ge.do.LahH1419cityעִיר־'ir-H5892,a threeשְׁלֹ֥שֶׁתshe.Lo.shetH7969days’יָמִֽים׃ya.MimH3117walkמַהֲלַ֖ךְma.ha.LakhH4109.

4Then Jonahיוֹנָה֙yo.NahH3124beganוַיָּ֤חֶלvai.Ya.chelH2490to goלָב֣וֹאla.Vo'H935through the cityבָעִ֔ירva.'IrH5892oneאֶחָ֑ד'e.ChadH259day’sי֣וֹםYomH3117walkמַהֲלַ֖ךְma.ha.LakhH4109; and hecriedוַיִּקְרָא֙vai.yik.Ra'H7121out and saidוַיֹּאמַ֔רvai.yo.MarH559, “Yetע֚וֹדodH5750fortyאַרְבָּעִ֣ים'ar.ba.'ImH705daysי֔וֹםYomH3117and Ninevehוְנִֽינְוֵ֖הve.ni.ne.VehH5210will be overthrownנֶהְפָּֽכֶת׃neh.Pa.khetH2015.”

5Then the peopleH376of Ninevehנִֽינְוֵ֖הnin.VehH5210believedוַֽיַּאֲמִ֛ינוּvai.ya.'a.Mi.nuH539in Godבֵּֽאלֹהִ֑יםbe.lo.HimH430;and they calledוַיִּקְרְאוּ־vai.yik.re.'u-H7121afastצוֹם֙tzOmH6685and putוַיִּלְבְּשׁ֣וּvai.yil.be.ShuH3847on sackclothשַׂקִּ֔יםsa.KimH8242from the greatestמִגְּדוֹלָ֖םmi.ge.do.LamH1419to the leastקְטַנָּֽם׃ke.ta.NamH6996of them.

6When the wordהַדָּבָר֙ha.da.VarH1697reachedוַיִּגַּ֤עvai.yi.Ga'H5060the kingמֶ֣לֶךMe.lekhH4428of Ninevehנִֽינְוֵ֔הnin.VehH5210,he aroseוַיָּ֙קָם֙vai.Ya.komH6965from his throneמִכִּסְא֔וֹmi.kis.'OH3678,laidH5674asideH5674his robeאַדַּרְתּ֖וֹ'a.dar.ToH155from him,coveredוַיְכַ֣סvay.KhasH3680himselfwith sackclothשַׂ֔קSakH8242and satוַיֵּ֖שֶׁבvai.Ye.shevH3427on theashesהָאֵֽפֶר׃ha.'E.ferH665.

7He issuedH2199aproclamationH2199and it saidH559, “In Ninevehבְּנִֽינְוֵ֔הbe.ni.ne.VehH5210by the decreeמִטַּ֧עַםmi.Ta.'amH2940of the kingהַמֶּ֛לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428and his noblesוּגְדֹלָ֖יוu.ge.do.LavH1419:Do not let manהָאָדָ֨םha.'a.DamH120,beastוְהַבְּהֵמָ֜הve.ha.be.he.MahH929,herdהַבָּקָ֣רha.ba.KarH1241,or flockוְהַצֹּ֗אןve.ha.TzonH6629tasteיִטְעֲמוּ֙yit.'a.MuH2938a thingמְא֔וּמָהme.'U.mahH3972.Do not let them eatיִרְע֔וּyir.'UH7462or drinkיִשְׁתּֽוּ׃yish.TuH8354waterוּמַ֖יִםu.Ma.yimH4325.

8But both manהָֽאָדָם֙ha.'a.DamH120and beastוְהַבְּהֵמָ֔הve.ha.be.he.MahH929must be coveredוְיִתְכַּסּ֣וּve.yit.ka.SuH3680with sackclothשַׂקִּ֗יםsa.KimH8242; and let mencallוְיִקְרְא֥וּve.yik.re.'UH7121on Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430earnestlyבְּחָזְקָ֑הbe.cha.ze.KahH2394that eachאִ֚ישׁ'ishH376mayturnוְיָשֻׁ֗בוּve.ya.Shu.vuH7725from his wickedH7463wayמִדַּרְכּ֣וֹmi.dar.KoH1870and from the violenceהֶחָמָ֖סhe.cha.MasH2555whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834is inhis handsבְּכַפֵּיהֶֽם׃be.kha.pei.HemH3709.

9Whoמִֽי־mi-H4310knowsיוֹדֵ֣עַyo.De.a'H3045,Godהָאֱלֹהִ֑יםha.'E.lo.HimH430may turnיָשׁ֔וּבya.ShuvH7725and relentוְנִחַ֖םve.ni.ChamH5162and withdrawוְשָׁ֛בve.ShavH7725His burningמֵחֲר֥וֹןme.cha.RonH2740angerאַפּ֖וֹ'a.PoH639so that we will not perishנֹאבֵֽד׃no.VedH6.”

10When Godהָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ha.'E.lo.HimH430sawוַיַּ֤רְאvai.Yar'H7200their deedsמַ֣עֲשֵׂיהֶ֔םma.'a.sei.HemH4639, that theyturnedשָׁ֖בוּSha.vuH7725from their wickedH7463wayמִדַּרְכָּ֣םmi.dar.KamH1870, thenGodהָאֱלֹהִ֗יםha.'E.lo.HimH430relentedוַיִּנָּ֣חֶםvai.yi.Na.chemH5162concerningעַל־'al-H5921the calamityH7463whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834He had declaredדִּבֶּ֥רdi.BerH1696He wouldbringלַעֲשׂוֹת־la.'a.sot-H6213upon them. And He did not doעָשָֽׂה׃'a.SahH6213it.
