Context of Micah 1:5
3For behold, the Lord is coming forth from His place. He will come down and tread on the high places of the earth. 4The mountains will melt under Him And the valleys will be split, Like wax before the fire, Like water poured down a steep place. All this is for the rebellion of Jacob And for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the rebellion of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? What is the high place of Judah? Is it not Jerusalem? 6For I will make Samaria a heap of ruins in the open country, Planting places for a vineyard. I will pour her stones down into the valley And will lay bare her foundations. 7All of her idols will be smashed, All of her earnings will be burned with fire And all of her images I will make desolate, For she collected them from a harlot’s earnings, And to the earnings of a harlot they will return.

Commentaries on Micah 1:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5What is the transgression of Jacob? - Is it not something extremely grievous? Is it not that of Samaria? Samaria and Jerusalem, the chief cities, are infected with idolatry. Each has its high places, and its idol worship, in opposition to the worship of the true God. That there was idolatry practiced by the elders of Israel, even in the temple of Jehovah, see Ezekiel 8:1, etc. As the royal cities in both kingdoms gave the example of gross idolatry, no…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5For the transgression of Jacob is all this - Not for any change of purpose in God; nor, again, as the effect of man‘s lust of conquest. None could have any power against God‘s people, unless it had been given him by God. Those mighty monarchies of old existed but as God‘s instruments, especially toward His own people. God said at this time of Assyria Isaiah 10:5, Asshur rod of Mine anger, and the staff in his hand is Mine indignation; and Isaiah 37:26…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5Transgression is the same as sins. These two words describe Israel's failure in the Old Testament. What is … what it: The capital cities of God's people should have been holy places, but they became sources of corruption instead. Samaria, the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel, was built by Omri, who ruled from 885 to 874 BC. It was a political, military, and economic crossroads of the ancient Near East (1 Kings 16:24). Omri was an evil king, so…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. For the transgression of Jacob is all this--All these terrors attending Jehovah's coming are caused by the sins of Jacob or Israel, that is, the whole people. What is the transgression of Jacob?--Taking up the question often in the mouths of the people when reproved, "What is our transgression?" (compare Mal 1:6, 7), He answers, Is it not Samaria? Is not that city (the seat of the calf-worship) the cause of Jacob's apostasy (1Ki 14:16; 15:26, 34…Read the comment
