Context of Mark 1:13

11and a voice came out of the heavens: “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.” 12Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness. And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him. 14Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

Commentaries on Mark 1:13

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13With the wild beasts - This is a curious circumstance, which is mentioned by none of the other evangelists; and seems to intimate that he was in the most remote, unfrequented, and savage part of the desert; which, together with the diabolic influence, tended to render the whole scene the more horrid. Perhaps this very circumstance is mentioned, as emblematical of that savage and brutal cruelty with which he was persecuted to death by the Jews and…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 Christ's baptism was his first public appearance, after he had long lived unknown. How much hidden worth is there, which in this world is not known! But sooner or later it shall be known, as Christ was. He took upon himself the likeness of sinful flesh; and thus, for our sakes, he sanctified himself, that we also might be sanctified, and be baptized with him, Joh 17:19. See how honourably God owned him, when he submitted to John's baptism. He…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-13the Spirit drove Jesus (compare Matthew 4:1; Luke 4:1): he Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness. From the beginning of his ministry, Jesus defeated Satan and resisted temptation. His later acts of casting out demons (Mark 1:21–34; 3:11–12; 5:1–20; 9:14–27) show the results of that victory (see 3:27). Jesus was tempted in the wilderness of Judea. In Scripture, the wilderness often has a sense of danger and evil because of Satan and wild animals (Isaiah…Read the comment
