Context of Mark 15:8

6Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. 7The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. 9Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

Commentaries on Mark 15:8

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8The multitude crying aloud - . The word itself strongly marks the vociferations, or, to come nearer the original word, the bellowing of the multitude. It signifies, properly, a loud and long cry, such as Christ emitted on the cross. See the whole history of these proceedings against our Lord treated at large, on Matthew 27 (note).Read the comment

In many cases, ancient societies released prisoners during special holidays. Barabbas: See also Matthew 27:16–17; Luke 23:19. who had committed murder during the insurrection: Pilate's willingness to release Barabbas likely shows that Barabbas had not killed Roman citizens or soldiers (Matthew 15:15).Read the comment
