Context of Mark 15:8

6Now during the feast, he used to release to them one prisoner, anyone they were asking for. 7Now a man named Bar-Abba had been in jail with the rebels who had committed murder during the rebellion. The crowd came up and began to request what he was accustomed to do for them. 9But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10For he knew that out of envy the ruling kohanim had handed Him over.

Commentaries on Mark 15:8

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8The multitude crying aloud - . The word itself strongly marks the vociferations, or, to come nearer the original word, the bellowing of the multitude. It signifies, properly, a loud and long cry, such as Christ emitted on the cross. See the whole history of these proceedings against our Lord treated at large, on Matthew 27 (note).Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-8The custom described in 15:6–8 is not known outside of the Gospels, but all four Gospels mention it (Matthew 27:15–21; Luke 23:18–25; John 18:37–40). In many cases, ancient societies released prisoners during special holidays. Barabbas: See also Matthew 27:16–17; Luke 23:19. who had committed murder during the insurrection: Pilate's willingness to release Barabbas likely shows that Barabbas had not killed Roman citizens or soldiers (Matthew 15:15).Read the comment
