Context of Job 18:9

7His vigorous stride is shortened, And his own scheme brings him down. 8For he is thrown into the net by his own feet, And he steps on the webbing. A snare seizes him by the heel, And a trap snaps shut on him. 10A noose for him is hidden in the ground, And a trap for him on the path. 11All around terrors frighten him, And harry him at every step.

From the beginning of the seventh verse to the end of the thirteenth there is an allusion to the various arts and methods practiced in hunting. 1. • Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9The gin - Another method of taking wild beasts. It was a snare so made as to spring suddenly on an animal, securing him by the neck or feet. We use a trap for the same purpose. The Hebrew word (פח pach ) may denote anything of this kind - a snare, net, noose, etc. with which birds or wild animals are taken. By the heel - By the foot. And the robber shall prevail - He shall be overpowered by the highwayman; or the plunderer shall make a sudden descent upon…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-10Verses 5-10 Bildad describes the miserable condition of a wicked man; in which there is much certain truth, if we consider that a sinful condition is a sad condition, and that sin will be men's ruin, if they do not repent. Though Bildad thought the application of it to Job was easy, yet it was not safe nor just. It is common for angry disputants to rank their opponents among God's enemies, and to draw wrong conclusions from important truths. The…Read the comment
