Habakkuk 2:5-20
Furthermore, 1wine betrays the 2haughty man, So that he does not 3stay at home. He 4enlarges his appetite like Sheol, And he is like death, never satisfied. He also gathers to himself all nations And collects to himself all peoples.
“Will not all of these 5take up a taunt-song against him, Even mockery and insinuations against him And say, ‘6Woe to him who increases what is not his-- For how long-- And makes himself 7rich with loans?’7Will not 8your creditors 9rise up suddenly, And those who 10collect from you awaken? Indeed, you will become plunder for them.8Because you have 11looted many nations, All the remainder of the peoples will loot you-- Because of human bloodshed and violence 12done to the land, To the town and all its inhabitants.
“Woe to him who gets 13evil gain for his house To 14put his nest on high, To be delivered from the hand of calamity!10You have devised a 15shameful thing for your house By cutting off many peoples; So you are 16sinning against yourself.11Surely the 17stone will cry out from the wall, And the rafter will answer it from the 18framework.
“Woe to him who 19builds a city with bloodshed And founds a town with 20violence!13Is it not indeed from the Lord of hosts That peoples 21toil for fire, And nations grow weary for nothing?14For the earth will be 22filled With the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, As the waters cover the sea.
“Woe to you who make 23your neighbors drink, Who mix in your venom even to make them drunk So as to look on their nakedness!16You will be filled with disgrace rather than honor. Now you yourself 24drink and 25expose your own nakedness. The 26cup in the Lord’s right hand will come around to you, And 27utter disgrace will come upon your glory.17For the 28violence 29done to Lebanon will 30overwhelm you, And the devastation of its beasts 31by which you terrified them, 32Because of human bloodshed and 33violence 34done to the land, To the town and all its inhabitants.
“What 35profit is the 36idol when its maker has carved it, Or 37an image, a 38teacher of falsehood? For its maker 39trusts in his own handiwork When he fashions speechless idols.19Woe to him who 40says to a piece of wood, ‘41Awake!’ To a mute stone, ‘Arise!’ And that is your teacher? Behold, it is overlaid with 42gold and silver, And there is 43no breath at all inside it.20But the 44Lord is in His holy temple. 45Let all the earth 46be silent before Him.”
