Genesis 28:12-22

121He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, 2the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13And behold, 3the Lord stood 4above it and said, “I am the Lord, 5the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it 6to you and to 7your 8descendants. 14Your 9descendants will also be like 10the dust of the earth, and you will 11spread out 12to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and 13in you and in your 14descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15Behold, 15I am with you and 16will keep you wherever you go, and 17will bring you back to this land; for 18I will not leave you until I have done what I have 19promised you.” 16Then Jacob 20awoke from his sleep and said, “21Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17He was afraid and said, “22How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

18So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took 23the stone that he had put 24under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. 19He called the name of that place 2526Bethel; however, 27previously the name of the city had been 28Luz. 20Then Jacob 29made a vow, saying, “30If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I 31take, and will give me 3233food to eat and garments to wear, 21and 34I return to my father’s house in 35safety, 36then the Lord will be my God. 22This stone, which I have set up as a pillar, 37will be God’s house, and 38of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”
