Galatians 4:9-31
9But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be 1known by God, 2how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless 34elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again? 10You 5observe days and months and seasons and years. 11I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored 6over you in vain.
12I beg of you, 7brethren, 8become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have done me no wrong; 13but you know that it was because of a 9bodily illness that I preached the gospel to you the 10first time; 14and that which was a 11trial to you in my 12bodily condition you did not despise or 13loathe, but 14you received me as an angel of God, as 15Christ Jesus Himself. 15Where then is 16that sense of blessing you had? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. 16So have I become your enemy 17by 18telling you the truth? 17They eagerly seek you, not commendably, but they wish to shut you out so that you will seek them. 18But it is good always to be eagerly sought in a commendable 19manner, and 20not only when I am present with you. 1921My children, with whom 22I am again in labor until 23Christ is formed in you-- 20but I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for 24I am perplexed about you.
21Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not 25listen to the law? 22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, 26one by the bondwoman and 27one by the free woman. 23But 28the son by the bondwoman 29was born according to the flesh, and 30the son by the free woman through the promise. 243132This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from 33Mount Sinai bearing children 34who are to be 35slaves; 36she is Hagar. 25Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26But 37the Jerusalem above is free; 38she is our mother. 27For it is written, “39Rejoice, barren woman who does not bear; Break forth and shout, you who are not in labor; For more numerous are the children of the desolate Than of the one who has a husband.” 28And you brethren, 40like Isaac, are 41children of promise. 29But as at that time 42he who was born according to the flesh 43persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, 44so it is now also. 30But what does the Scripture say? “45Cast out the bondwoman and her son, For 46the son of the bondwoman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman.” 31So then, brethren, we are not children of a bondwoman, 47but of the free woman.
