Galatians 4:4-31
4But when 1the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, 2born of a woman, born 3under 4the Law, 5so that He might redeem those who were under 5the Law, that we might receive the adoption as 6sons. 6Because you are sons, 7God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “8Abba! Father!” 7Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and 9if a son, then an heir 10through God.
8However at that time, 11when you did not know God, you were 12slaves to 13those which by nature are no gods. 9But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be 14known by God, 15how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless 1617elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again? 10You 18observe days and months and seasons and years. 11I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored 19over you in vain.
12I beg of you, 20brethren, 21become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have done me no wrong; 13but you know that it was because of a 22bodily illness that I preached the gospel to you the 23first time; 14and that which was a 24trial to you in my 25bodily condition you did not despise or 26loathe, but 27you received me as an angel of God, as 28Christ Jesus Himself. 15Where then is 29that sense of blessing you had? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. 16So have I become your enemy 30by 31telling you the truth? 17They eagerly seek you, not commendably, but they wish to shut you out so that you will seek them. 18But it is good always to be eagerly sought in a commendable 32manner, and 33not only when I am present with you. 1934My children, with whom 35I am again in labor until 36Christ is formed in you-- 20but I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for 37I am perplexed about you.
21Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not 38listen to the law? 22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, 39one by the bondwoman and 40one by the free woman. 23But 41the son by the bondwoman 42was born according to the flesh, and 43the son by the free woman through the promise. 244445This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from 46Mount Sinai bearing children 47who are to be 48slaves; 49she is Hagar. 25Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26But 50the Jerusalem above is free; 51she is our mother. 27For it is written, “52Rejoice, barren woman who does not bear; Break forth and shout, you who are not in labor; For more numerous are the children of the desolate Than of the one who has a husband.” 28And you brethren, 53like Isaac, are 54children of promise. 29But as at that time 55he who was born according to the flesh 56persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, 57so it is now also. 30But what does the Scripture say? “58Cast out the bondwoman and her son, For 59the son of the bondwoman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman.” 31So then, brethren, we are not children of a bondwoman, 60but of the free woman.
