1 John 3:9-24

9No one who is 1 2born of God 3practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is 4born of God. 10By this the 5children of God and the 6children of the devil are obvious: 7anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who 8does not love his 9brother.

11 10For this is the message 11which you have heard from the beginning, 12that we should love one another; 12not as 13Cain, who was of 14the evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because 15his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.

13Do not be surprised, brethren, if 16the world hates you. 14We know that we have 17passed out of death into life, 18because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. 15Everyone who 19hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that 20no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 16We know love by this, that 21He laid down His life for us; and 22we ought to lay down our lives for the 23brethren. 17But 24whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and 25closes his 26heart 27against him, 28how does the love of God abide in him? 18 29Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and 30truth. 19We will know by this that we are 31of the truth, and will 32assure our heart before Him 20 33in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. 21 34Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have 35confidence 36before God; 22and 37whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we 38keep His commandments and do 39the things that are pleasing in His sight.

23This is His commandment, that we 40 41believe in 42the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as 43He 44commanded us. 24The one who 45keeps His commandments 46abides in Him, and He in him. 47We know by this that 48He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
