6Zacchaeus came down and was glad to welcome Jesus into his home. 7But the people who saw this began to express disapproval. They said, “He went to be the guest of a sinner.” ⌞Later, at dinner,⌟ Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Lord, I’ll give half of my property to the poor. I’ll pay four times as much as I owe to those I have cheated in any way.” 9Then Jesus said to Zacchaeus, “You and your family have been saved today. You’ve shown that you, too, are one of Abraham’s descendants. 10Indeed, the Son of Man has come to seek and to save people who are lost.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8The half of my goods I give to the poor - Probably he had already done so for some time past; though it is generally understood that the expressions only refer to what he now purposed to do. If I have taken any thing - by false accusation - , from , a fig, and , I show or declare; for among the primitive Athenians, when the use of that fruit was first found out, or in the time of a dearth, when all sorts of provisions were exceedingly scarce, it was…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The half of my goods I give to the poor - It is not necessary to understand this as affirming that this “had” been his practice, or that he said this in the way of proclaiming his own righteousness. It maybe understood rather as a purpose which he “then” formed under the teaching of Christ. He seems to have been sensible that he was a sinner. Of this he was convinced, as we may suppose, by the presence and discourse of Jesus. At first, attracted only by…Read the comment

Zacchaeus apparently viewed the money he had gained through dishonesty as theft and promised to repay it fully.Read the comment
