Context of Luke 19:8
6And he made haste and came down, and received him with joy. 7And all murmured when they saw [it], saying, He has turned in to lodge with a sinful man. But Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I return [him] fourfold. 9And Jesus said to him, To-day salvation is come to this house, inasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham; 10for the Son of man has come to seek and to save that which is lost.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8The half of my goods I give to the poor - Probably he had already done so for some time past; though it is generally understood that the expressions only refer to what he now purposed to do. If I have taken any thing - by false accusation - , from , a fig, and , I show or declare; for among the primitive Athenians, when the use of that fruit was first found out, or in the time of a dearth, when all sorts of provisions were exceedingly scarce, it was…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The half of my goods I give to the poor - It is not necessary to understand this as affirming that this “had” been his practice, or that he said this in the way of proclaiming his own righteousness. Of this he was convinced, as we may suppose, by the presence and discourse of Jesus. At first, attracted only by…Read the comment
